Mission
The Junior League of Buffalo, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.  Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
President's Message
Beth Montague HeadshotDear Members,

As many of you know, the membership of the Junior League of Buffalo voted at the September General Meeting on two important membership requirements:  As a result, there is no longer a cookbook purchase requirement, and there is now a requirement for Active Members to purchase an annual Junior League of Buffalo tee shirt.

There are currently 2,340 copies of Great Lake Effects in our inventory.  Of course, the book is still available for purchase if you wish.  The price is $7 per book or $36 for a case of six.  Contact Joelle Rebl or Barbara Bielecki if you'd like to buy one (or more!), and they'll be happy to facilitate the purchase.  We also have a limited number for purchase at HQ's, if that's more convenient for you--the office is open 9am - 2pm, Monday through Thursday.

It was great to have such a lively discussion at the September General Meeting about our tee shirt fundraiser.  Thanks to all who participated and shared their thoughts--your attention and interest were welcomed!  I'll summarize the fundraiser in an effort to keep this message brief:  Every Active Member of the JLB will be required to purchase an annual tee shirt (currently available at www.bluebisonsports.com). This new effort, as voted on by the membership,  will both augment the operating budget and increase marketing opportunities. There are two styles available, a traditional "boxy" fit, and one with a more modern fit.  Blue Bison, a local company, will have your shirt ready in approximately two weeks.  You may pay a shipping charge and have the shirt delivered or stop by their Williamsville facility to pick up the shirt; if you haven't picked it up by the next general

meeting, the shirts will be at the registration table for you to claim.  The shirt must be purchased during the 2010 - 2011 League year, but before 4/1/2011, when dues for the coming year are payable and after which members delinquent in fulfilling requirements are contacted.

There is no requirement that you wear your shirt--just that you purchase one. Sustaining and Provisional members are welcomed to purchase a shirt, as well--this is a great way to market our organization!

We had great feedback during the vote about re-styling the shirts on an annual basis and offering different types of merchandise, with the League still profiting no more than $15 per item.  This is a great idea and one that will be considered when this requirement comes to a vote again in the spring of 2012.  (Fundraising requirements are voted on in non-Show House years.)

As always, if you have any concerns, just give me a call.  Again, my thanks to all who attended and participated in our September General meeting--it was great to see such a sizable, enthusiastic audience.

Please join us for the October 26 General Meeting at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site.  After the meeting, we plan to have some social time at Tempo

Best,
Beth Montague

Kate Bukowski
Kate Bukowski
Kate Bukowski, a Vice President at M&T Bank, was honored for her achievements both professionally and in the not-for-profit arena with the "Community Supporter" award.  She said, "In 1992, when working on the World University Games beautification project for the Junior League of Buffalo, I saw "London in Bloom" while vacationing in England.  In 1994, Buffalo in Bloom began as a project of the Buffalo Green Fund.  For the last 16 years, we have been encouraging Buffalo city residents to improve their property by planting a front garden, that in turn, will improve the look of their city."
Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker
Clotilde Dedecker

Clotilde Perez-Bode Dedecker, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, was honored in the "Non-Profit Leadership" category.  Clotilde is a Past President of both the Junior League of Buffalo and of the Association of Junior Leagues International.  She cites her biggest influence coming from "The Junior League's commitment to training women as civic leaders."

We are so proud of these two ladies!

Did You Know?
From Connected, a publication of AJLI, inc...

JLBookCoverOver the years, The Junior League has been the subject of two books definitely worth a read, The Junior League:  100 Years of Volunteer Service and The Volunteer Powerhouse.

Loaded with important history, profiles of inspiring women, and compelling coverage of significant accomplishments with great relevance to The Junior League of today (and an occasional bit of juicy trivia), the titles are increasingly tough to get your hands on, so we decided to serialize them, chapter by chapter, on Connected to make them more accessible to members.
