Dear Member,
At our meeting on February 23rd, we received a report from Brigid Doherty, Executive Director of the WNY Women's Fund, regarding the groundbreaking study Pathways to Progress, on the status of girls and women in WNY. We all heard the sobering statistics, and participated in a lively discussion of how the JLB could assist the WNYWF, and help to smoothe those Pathways. We also saw a stirring video, prepared by Delaware North, to highlight the need for change. You may click on the YouTube icon above to view the video. Those ladies present also agreed that the first thing we must do immediately, is to ensure that the report's findings gets to as many people as possible, to educate those who might help. Links are attached, so that you can view the Executive Summary, and the Full Report, and forward those documents to any family, friends or colleagues who you think might be interested in the information.

We also heard a presentation by Mary Jo Hunt, JLB Past President, on the AJLI Strategic Road Map, including a well-thought-out process to ensure that the AJLI is meeting the needs of its members, and the communities that we are improving. The members were then broken up into smaller talking groups, and each group prepared answers to AJLI questions, which Mary Jo will be passing along to leadership at AJLI.

If you need to register as a member on the AJLI site, just call or e-mail Erin Wilkins, or Jill at Headquarters, to find out your Member Number. Once you have that, you just need to create a user name and password to see all of the valuable information available only to members of Junior League.
Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 23rd, at 6:30 p.m., at the Nichols School, Flickinger Performing Arts Center, 1250 Amherst Street, Buffalo, NY 14216.
I'd like to thank Molly Quackenbush, JLB Sustainer, and Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, which hosted our March meeting. The renovations to the Wilcox Mansion are a marvel, and it was a lovely opportunity for us all to see what's new and fantastic at the Site. Find out more about the JLB's long history with the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site down a little further in our "Did You Know?" section.
Sincerely,
Anne Leary, PresidentJunior League of Buffalo

We understand that our Cookbook Chair, Melissa Rodemeyer, has created a cuter little Bun-in-the-Oven than any mere cookbook has ever seen. Her name is Eva Elizabeth, she entered the world on February 23rd at 8:27 a.m., weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces, and is 21 inches long. |
| Professional Clothing Drive for Gerard Place |
As part of their service project, this year's provisional class is organizing a work fair at Gerard Place of Buffalo. Gerard Place, the 2007 Show House recipient, offers transitional housing and supportive services for single parent families. As part of their service project, the provisional class is hoping to give the residents a fresh start, by providing them with lightly-used professional clothing with which to enter their new careers. Needed: Lightly-used professional clothing. All sizes accepted, but larger sizes (12+) are in the highest demand. When to donate: Clothing can be brought to our JLB Monthly Meeting in March.
Additional Questions: Kari Anderson at deoida402@yahoo.com or call her at 725-7986. The group is also happy to meet anyone with donations in the Blasdell or Williamsville area as well!
They also continue to work on their service project of Gerard Place Apartment Makeovers. They are actively collecting new and gently used household items for Gerard Place. This spring, they will graduate a record 8 families. When a family graduates, they take all their household goods and furnishings with them. This means that Gerard Place will need to refurnish eight apartments within a very short amount of time.
Needed: New and gently used household items and furnishings. When to donate: Smaller donations can be brought to our JLB Monthly Meeting in March. Please contact Gerard Place directly for the donation of larger items. Additional Questions: Loretta Carrison at lorettacarrison@rocketmail.com or call her at 400-6278.
For tax purposes, a receipt for donated items can be issued. Your receipt will be given to you after our April 13 provisional project. If you'd like a receipt, please give Kari Anderson the following information: Your complete name, your address, and the estimated value of the donated items.
Thanks to Kari and all of our provisionals for their dedication and hard work! |

In the 1960s, the Ansley Wilcox Mansion, the site of Theodore Roosevelt's Inauguration after the assassination of President McKinley, was in danger of demolition, and the Junior League of Buffalo stepped forward with a pledge of $50,000 (worth around $400,000 to $1,000,000 in today's dollars) and the commitment of JLB volunteers, to help save it.
The financial pledge was an enormous amount, and it was money we hadn't even raised yet - but our commitment, and our determination, turned the tide, and began a series of steps which not only saved the site, but turned it into the vibrant National Historic Site that it is today.
Please stop by for a tour of the expanded Site that includes the new carriage house (constructed on the footprint of the original Wilcox carriage house) and an exciting new guided tour experience that transports visitors, both young and old, back to the drama of 1901 through state of the art multi-media and interactive components.
This is an experience like no other in Western New York. Along with a new Museum Shop, Visitor Center and elevator, the Site has truly become a museum for the twenty-first century. Please also visit their website at www.trsite.org, and do try to attend one of their upcoming Mother-Daughter Teas on Saturday, May 1st or Sunday, May 2nd, an afternoon filled with the special ambiance of a bygone era. Pre-paid reservations required. |
If you'd like to see some of our photo albums on Kodak Gallery, click on the link below, and sort through the various events, dating back to 2005! If you find a pic of yourself, or a friend, that you particularly like, you can order it there on-line, too.
