Dear Member,

Community Health Foundation LogoAt our meeting on January 26th, we were treated to an address from our distinguished guest speaker Ann F. Monroe, President of  the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York.  Her message included some sobering statistics on chronic conditions in the Western New York area, and how the Community Health Foundation's focus on deferring frailty among the elderly, improving the health (including dental health) of children from birth to age five, and supporting people and communities in making good health decisions and accessing high quality care, will commit their resources and focus their attention for the long-term.

We were also taken through a review of our financial health as an organization by Alexandra Wehr and Angela Hall.  And our Council VPs took us through some of their goals for this year.  There's at at least one of them that you can help us with:  please make sure that we have your proper contact information!  Check out the latest edition of the White Book, and make sure that we have all of your addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail address.  If anything needs updating, please e-mail Jill at jlb@jlbuffalo.org.  Thanks!

Teddy Roosevelt SiteOur next meeting will take place on Tuesday, February 23rd, at 6:30 p.m., at The Teddy Roosevelt National Historic Site, 641 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY.  They have a parking lot in back, on Franklin, and we can also use the bank's parking lot next door, or parking along Delaware Avenue.

Sincerely,

Anne Leary, President

Junior League Honoree: Jennifer Berryman
Jennifer Berryman PicThe National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York honored 19 people and three organizations at its annual Community Leader Awards Luncheon on Jan. 21 in the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, and among those was Junior League's own Jennifer Berryman, who was honored for her commitment to community service.

The human relations organization has been working to combat racism and discrimination in the area since it was founded as a branch of the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1951.  Mary H. Gresham, dean of the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education and chairwoman of the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York, said the gathering is designed to honor organizations and individuals distinguishing themselves as leaders in the community through their work on behalf of others.

Congratulations to Jennifer!  We're proud of you!

Show House Proceeds: Update

by Julie Warman

Wallace Estate RenderingThe 2010 Show House Proceeds Committee has just conducted interviews with our short list of finalists and we will be doing site visits with each organization in the next week.  Once this step is finished, we will meet as a committee to determine which agencies will be asked to give a presentation to the JLB at the general meeting on April 27th.  The committee has been working very hard to ensure that we identify well-qualified and exciting candidates to benefit from Show House Proceeds.  Make sure you save the date to participate in the Proceeds Vote on April 27th!
WNY Women's Fund: Pathways to Progress
Pathways to Progress LogoYou may remember when Brigid Doherty, Executive Director of the WNY Women's Fund addressed our general meeting a few months ago on the topic of Domestic Violence.  The WNY Women's Fund has just unveiled a report, Pathways to Progress, which took 18 months to prepare, in collaboration with the UB Regional Institute, tabulating and quantifying how women are doing in the Western New York area.  As expected, the results are not good, but the report points out leverage points where we can make positive changes in the lives of women and girls, suggestions for change, and benchmarks to point out where progress is being made.

AJLI Resources:  Strategic Planning Video

The AJLI website has a tremendous number of resources for Junior League members all over the world - including you!  You'll have to log into the website as a member, and for this, you'll need your AJLI Member ID Number.  If you don't know what it is, please contact headquarters, and Jill will have it for you.  Then you create a username and a password, and you'll enjoy all of the privileges of being  a Member!  For instance, you will love this video, showing an update on the AJLI Strategic Roadmap.  Click on the link, and then, once you're registered (if you're not already), you can view either the 5-minute presentation, or the more in-depth 20-minute presentation.  AJLI is working with members around the country to improve all aspects of membership.  And, while you're on the site, have a look around -- there is much more material on the ajli.org site about this process, as well as information on the activities of Leagues around the globe...take a look!  Contact Beth Montague with any questions.

Buffalo Powder Keg Festival
Buffalo Powder Keg PicDuring the weekend of February 27-28, downtown Buffalo will be transformed into a festive winter celebration like nothing the city has seen before, and we're going to need your help to pull it off. Over the course of two days, hundreds of volunteers will be mobilized at all levels of the festival. We need to organize a Junior League Team of 20 or more volunteers. Junior League Cookbook:  Bridal Show Booth
Junior League Booth PicThe Junior League was graciously granted a $1,000 table at the Bridal Show, courtesy of Tuxedo Junction, to sell our cookbook! It was very short notice, so we are especially grateful to those who turned up to staff the table on our behalf, on the weekend of January 9th and 10th!  Special thanks to Amy Braczynski, Lisa McCarthy, Cornelia Willis (Astrid's daughter), Jean Sanders (Sustainer), Regan Nuchereno (Web), Kim Brooks (Web), Joelle ReblMelissa Rodermeyer (Chair), Jackie Tirone (pictured above), and Barbara Bielecki and Kitty Lysiak for making all of the arrangements!

Tuxedo Junction LogoAs always, we are proud of our members' willingness to help when needed and are grateful to have such a wonderful group of women to work with.  And another special thank you to Tuxedo Junction for their generosity.
Condolences
Dear Members,

It is with my deepest sympathy that we acknowledge the death of Dean Stathacos, beloved husband of our former JLB President, Leta Stathacos.
