Old Cables Are New Again
Image by Cyril Z. | At DC Access we are always looking for ways to make our business greener. In addition to initiatives in our office, like reducing paper with automatic billing, we strive to be responsible with the equipment we use too.
For instance, every installation we do requires several hundred feet of cable. When we remove or replace old cables, we take it to Super Salvage, a residential and commercial metal salvaging company in Southwest, so the copper can be removed and recycled.
There are also a number of options for recycling the many electronics individuals and businesses replace each year. At DC Access, we take advantage of the District's free programs, such as taking old cell phones to the police substation at 5th and E Streets, SE. For our larger items, like computers, we go to the now-weekly household hazardous waste and e-cycling drop-off on Saturdays at the Ft. Totten Trash Transfer Station.
We are always looking for more ways to reduce our footprint. Plus, recycling can have the added benefit of being profitable as well as responsible. To learn more, visit Earth911.

Anti-Virus Fake Still on the Attack
Be on the watch for a potentially fake notification that your computer may be compromised by malware. The virus displays an alert titled "Windows Security Center" recommending that you purchase and download an also-fake anti-virus program. As a result, you could be out $50 for software that isn't necessary, plus it runs a program that steals usernames and passwords.
The virus has been circulating for some time now, but we have seen it reemerge recently. So, remember to scrutinize messages that seem out of the ordinary and be sure you are dealing with a trusted resource, especially before making purchases or downloading programs. For background, see this blog post from C-NET.
