Budget Hearing for the City of San Jose Redevelopment Agency (RDA)
Tuesday, November 10, 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. San Jose City Hall - City Council Chambers 200 East Santa Clara Street, San Jose (Corner of Santa Clara and 4th Streets)
The Board of the RDA (the San Jose City Council) will be holding a
public hearing on Tuesday, November 10th, to seek community input on
the agency's budget and you are invited!
The San Jose
Redevelopment Agency funds parks, sidewalk repair, gang prevention,
affordable housing and community centers and creates jobs through the
development of public facilities like the convention center. Now its
vital budget is threatened by a state grab of $62 million AND a
reduction in the RDA funding mechanism.
As a result of these
economic forces, the proposed RDA budget calls for an 86% reduction for
Strengthening Neighborhoods, an 84% reduction in the Strong
Neighborhoods Initiative and a devastating 78% cut for Developing and
Preserving Affordable Housing.
A coalition of city residents,
neighborhood and business leaders, affordable housing advocates, faith
leaders and environmentalists are gathering to urge the City Council to
seek greater public participation in the RDA budget. Specifically,
these leaders are asking the RDA to set aside a portion of the proposed
budget to allow the public to provide direct community input resulting
in more equitable public spending, a higher quality of life and greater
government transparency and accountability.
Come tell the San
Jose City Council to resist a rubber stamp of the proposed RDA budget
and to support a full public review that can restore fairness for our
neighborhoods, housing and community priorities!
