NCTPP SEEKING NEW BOARD MEMBERS

At October's Board of Directors meeting we will form a nominating committee to interview for some new Board members as others step down. Each Board member must be willing to become the head of a permanent committee of their choice. We will send out applications after that meeting. The applications will include job descriptions of all permanent committees. If you are interested on being on this Board you can fill out the form and get it back to us. It's a lot of work but it's also great fun. You will also be working with some of the finest people in our community.

President's Message

It's been another great month for the NCTPP. We now have over 3,000 members. I clearly remember when it was just Elaine and I on February 27, 2009 and we had no idea of how to accomplish anything. We were never politically active nor were we involved in creating a non-profit organization.   But, with the help of a few determined patriots, we began. In some ways it seems like just yesterday, in other ways it seems like forever. I'll tell you this; it's all been worth it!

We now have a great Board of Directors who have stepped forward and driven the organization towards even greater success. You have stepped up and helped us by volunteering for our many projects. And, like all great organizations, it's the volunteers that create success.

                                    -----------------------

We finished the "Adopt a School" program with much success. Our national coordinator on this project singled out our own Shelly Rose as the top coordinator in the country on this project. We all owe her a big thank you.

                                    -----------------------

On September 27th we had our evening meeting, the Great Discussion, which was attended by over 120 people. George Rebane and Paul Emery were our guest speakers and did an outstanding job. The audience truly appreciated their presentation. It went so well that we will probably repeat the format in the future.

                                    -----------------------

If you read The Union, you have probably noticed that there are usually a letter or two that attack what we do., or what they think we are trying to do. These letters cannot go unanswered. We, you and I, must write responses to the lies. And that's exactly what they are lies. There is a saying that if you tell a lie often enough, people will begin to believe them. Don't let that happen. If your letter doesn't get in, don't be discouraged, write again and again.

                                    -----------------------

I get a lot of emails from our members regarding solicitations from groups using the "Tea Party" name. Virtually every one of these are in the Tea Party "business" to make money for themselves, That includes Tea Party Express, Tea Party Nation, Tea Party inc, and the list goes on and on. It is my suggestion that if you want to donate, please so to the Nevada County Tea Party Patriots. We use your monies for events, literature, merchandise and printing. We have no employees and the Board of Directors does not get even one cent, even though they work hard and put in a tremendous effort.

If you would like to help us with a donation, use PayPal on our website or send a check made out to NCTPP at 2036 Nevada City Highway, #216, Grass Valley, CA 95945.

We truly appreciate your financial support and your volunteerism.

"Great Discussion" A Big Success

On Tuesday evening, September 27th, the Nevada County Tea Party Patriots presented a "Great Discussion" to help bridge the communications gap between various political constituencies within Nevada County.  Our guest speakers were George Rebane, a Conservative and Paul Emery, a self-described "Green Libertarian".  George is well known for his blog, Rebane's Ruminations.  Paul is the news director at KVMR radio, known for it's liberal views.  Both guests were speaking for themselves and not for any organization.

This event was designed to provide a bridge between all political sides with a civil discussion of different points of view.  With over 120 people in attendance, the audience was engaged and gave both speakers a lot of applause when they were finished.  When asked if they would like more of this kind of event, they responded with more applause.

We began this civil discussion project when we sponsored the Candidate's Forum prior to the last primary election, in which all 19 candidates appeared on stage for a polite debate.  All parties and those in attendance felt that this event was non-partisan as well as very informative.

Government Targets Small Farms
submitted by Randi Briggs

Our farming communities are coming under attack. The Department of Transportation has decided it would be a good idea to put every aspect of farming under regulatory control. The DOT wants to require all farmers obtain a Commercial Drivers License in order to operate any farming equipment (on their own property). Is this another end run around Congress by a Presidential commission? The DOT Secretary Ray LaHood, holds a seat on the newly created White House Rural Council (Agenda 21). Ray LaHood and many members of the council have strong ties to George Soros and The Center for American Progress.

What these new rules mean is that "anyone driving a tractor or operating any motorized farming equipment would be forced to pass the same rigorous tests and fill out the same detailed forms and diaries required of semi-tractor trailer drivers. This reclassification would bury small farms and family farms in regulations and paperwork."  Is this intentional? I believe so.

It seems like each week we see new and creative ways that our freedoms are being regulated and curtailed. Most of my descendants were farmers. The kids drove the trucks and tractors from the time they were able to see over the steering wheel. Our country has depended on the small farmers. Imagine a world and a country without these stalwart dedicated people who supply us with all of our food. Imagine our government in charge of the growing and supply of all our food. Take a good look at any other government agency and tell me that this would end well.

Why the Banks Are Now Charging ATM Fees

Mike Brownfield, Heritage Foundation, October 3, 2011

Use a debit card? Now it's really going to cost you. Bank of America announced last week that it will begin charging customers $5 per month for use of their debit cards. But if you're looking for someone to blame, set your sights on Washington.

Bank of America is imposing the new fee in anticipation of a $2 billion annual loss brought about by the "Durbin Amendment" - a provision of last year's Dodd-Frank Wall Street financial reform bill.

Signed into law in July 2010, the measure was intended to protect America from another financial meltdown, but in reality it placed a boatload of new burdens on financial institutions and their customers. The results? Increased risks to the financial system, increased regulations, and in this case, increased costs to anyone who uses a debit card.

Under the Durbin Amendment-named for its backer Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL)-the federal government now limits the amount of money banks can charge merchants when you swipe your debit card, costing them an estimated $6.6 billion per year in revenue. Rather than recoup their costs from merchants, banks are looking to consumers to pay the bill.

Enter Bank of America's new fee. But they're not alone. Wells Fargo expects to lose $1 billion, prompting it to adopt a $3 fee for debit cards in some areas. JPMorgan Chase is also rolling out new fees, as is Citibank.     Smaller banks are getting into the game, too, as the Associated Press reports. Atlanta-based SunTrust recently instituted a $5 debit card fee, while Regions Financial in Birmingham, Alabama, will begin charging a $4 fee next month. In Texas, International Bancshares has announced last week the closure of 55 branches in grocery stores and the loss of 500 jobs.

Heritage's Diane Katz explains that free debit cards aren't the only things to disappear under the new law. Katz writes that a study fromBankrate.com found that the proportion of free checking accounts (of the non-interest variety) has fallen this year to 45 percent from 65 percent in 2010 and 76 percent two years ago. According to the 2011 Checking Account Survey, the number of free accounts "is likely to drop further as banks and their customers adjust to recent regulatory changes in banking." And, Katz says, those who can least afford it will pay the price:

The new fees will hit lower-income families the hardest. That's because banks often exempt premium accounts from user fees to nurture more profitable customers. Faced with higher fees, some cash-strapped consumers will migrate to credit cards-if they can qualify. More stringent regulations have tightened the availability of credit while also increasing interest rates and fees.

In typical populist fashion, Senator Durbin sold his amendment as consumer-friendly. But any regulation that increases consumer costs and raises consumer debt is inherently anti-consumer and economically destructive.

Bank of America is already seeing a backlash from its decision. Its stock dropped by more than 3.5 percent on Friday, and its website was hit with outages and glitches over the weekend (drawing speculation of attacks by disgruntled hackers). But that anger should be directed at Washington, which passed the regulations leading to the Durbin tax. And there's one thing Congress can and should do to solve the problem: repeal it.

Ant and the Grasshopper:
Two Different Versions... Two Different Morals

 Submitted by Adam Hayward

OLD VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE OLD STORY:

Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION

The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, PBS, CNN, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.

America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green...'

ACORN stages a demonstration in front of the ants' house where the news stations film the SEIU group singing, We Shall Overcome.

Then Rev. Jeremiah Wright has the group kneel down to pray for the grasshopper's sake, while he damns the ants.

President Obama condemns the ant and blames President Bush 43, President Bush 41, President Reagan, Christopher Columbus, and the Pope for the grasshopper's plight...

Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reid exclaim in an interview with Larry King that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the EEOC drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the Government Green Czar and given to the grasshopper.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow, never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the ramshackle, once prosperous and peaceful, neighborhood.

The entire Nation collapses bringing the rest of the free world with it.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Be careful how you vote in 2012.
