TOPParents/Guardians and Friends of North Springs Charter High School,

Happy New Year and Welcome Back!!

General announcements:

  • Financial Aid Night on January 10th was a huge success!  We had two amazing guest speakers with lots of resources to share.  Did you just need more information about the FAFSA, scholarship opportunities, or did you miss it altogether?  Check out all the scoop in this issue's 'Financial Aid Extra' in the 'senior' section...or just click here

  • The Princeton Review SAT preparation class is currently underway.  The second set of classes just began last weekend and there is an additional final opportunity for this class later in the Spring.  Check out the flyer here

  • Coming soon- Spartan Peer Tutoring

Spartan Peer Tutoring is free after school tutoring in the media center on Tuesdays from 3:45-4:30.  Students will sign up on Tuesday to work with an upperclassman that is experienced in a certain subject area (for example a student may be in AP Spanish and is able to assist Spanish 1 and 2 students who need extra help).  We hope this will be a great resource for all students!  The official start date for the tutoring sessions will be posted on our website as soon as it is determined!

  • PSAT (2011) scores are back (and have been back a few weeks earlier than expected).  If your student took this test then they should have received their results report just prior to winter break.  If for some reason it never made it home to you, we kept a copy in the counseling office.  You can have your student come by and request it or contact the counseling department.

  • Enrollment Information for new families for 2012-2013: Enrollment Application for Magnet Program are still available on North Spring's  website; Application deadline January 30th 2012.  Families to submit completed applications to Counseling Office.  Registration timeline for late registration to be published soon.

  • Teen Driving Information:Upcoming 'Car Control Clinic' reportedly reduces chances of a crash by up to 77%.  Check out this flyer about an upcoming car control clinic at John's Creek. $179 per parent/student team, parent required at all sessions.  Students need a Learner's permit or better.  See more here

Ninth9th Grade: Navigating your first year

First semester has come and gone, and you should have received a report card with your child's final grades in the mail.  If you did not receive a report card, please contact our front office at 770-551-2490 (and make sure we have your most up-to-date address in our system).  If your child was successful, congratulations and please make sure you express to your child how important it is to continue habits and behaviors that made him or her successful.  If your child was scrambling at the last minute, encourage him or her to seek assistance earlier.  If you are unsure as to what options are available for tutoring or assistance, do not hesitate to contact your child's teachers and counselor.  Also, if you do not have access to Home Access Parent Connect on Eschools, we encourage you to sign up!  It is very helpful to monitor your child's progress weekly as grades are entered.  Good luck for second semester!

Fulton County Home Access Center

If you are not a new enrollee, the parent/guardian must physically come by our front office and show ID to receive a login/password.

PREVIOUS INFORMATION:

If your student has not already done so....please begin to check-out and explore this website: Georgia College 411

If your student does not already have an account, they can create one, they will just need their GTID (Georgia Testing ID #) which can be obtained from their counselor and this will assist them in logging in and creating an account.  Many students should already have an account from last year or middle school.

RoadTenth 10th Grade: Continuing the journey

Just a repeat...but again, the PSAT results were distributed.  If your student's PSAT report did not make it all the way home, we kept a copy in the counseling office.  The report provides details in terms of how to interpret the scores, but essentially, you just add a zero to each score and add them up to approximate it to an actual SAT score.

As an aside, if your sophomore did exceptionally well (170+) and you are interested in your student receiving even more support, Edison Prep is providing some unique opportunities.  Please stop by the counseling office or see Mr. Levin for a sophomore-specific flyer.

PREVIOUS INFORMATION:

Thank you to all the parents (and students) that attended our 10th Grade Parent Night: Knowledge for College.  We had an amazing turn out with over 110 people signing in!  A special thanks to our guest speakers, Ms. Elisa Buckner, from Access2Admission and  Ms. Stephanie Espy, with MathSP.  As promised, they have attached a copy of their PowerPoint presentation for anybody that wants to review, or anybody that may have missed it.  Their presentation included 10th grade success, curriculum rigor, summer enrichment ideas, SAT/ACT prep considerations, scholarship/financial aid information, and dual enrollment information and the GA 'College Credit Now.'  Find their presentation here:

In addition, Ms. Espy has included a flyer about her upcoming SAT/ACT prep classes.  Check it out here.  Mention her flyer to receive 10% off the cost.  The ACT course begins on December 17th, 2011 from 9:00am - 12:30pm and prepares students for the February 2012 ACT.  The SAT course begins on January 15th, 2012 from 2:00pm - 5:30pm and prepares students for the March 2012 SAT.  Each course consists of 8 sessions including a full-length practice test, and includes 28.5 hours of prep as well as weekly tutorials.  Courses are held at Emory University with a maximum of 10 students per course.

Eleventh 11th Grade: Mapping out your  progress

The Counseling Department is approximately 90% complete with Junior EvaluationsOur goal was to be complete before the winter break.  In the event your student was absent, or we missed your student before finals our plan is to finish these up by the end of January.   We apologize for any delay, there has definitely been some unforseen counseling-related events that have kept us busy.  If in doubt, please contact your student's counselor!

PREVIOUS INFORMATION:

Junior Evaluations are currently underway!  Each counselor is working their way through their junior caseloads and meeting individually with your students.  Our hard deadline for completion is by the end of the fall semester!  Here is a sample of the junior evaluation packet that is being discussed, in addition to current credits/course progress: Junior Evaluation Packet

Want more information about scholarship opportunities.  Its never too early to start planning and plotting.  Here is an extensive free booklet of ideas, most open to american citizens.  Just make sure to research thoroughly and follow through the appropriate links to see if the opportunity fits your particular situation.  Click here

Success AheadTwelfth 12th Grade: The pathway to post-secondary

By now seniors should be mostly finished submitting college applications.  If your student is still undecided on his/her post-high school plans, please have them make an appointment to see their counselor to discuss options.  The Counseling Department is committed to ensuring that every senior leaves in May with plan.

Students and parents should be working on completing their FAFSA.  The application for seniors was made available January 5th and the sooner you submit your application for financial aid the better.

The last day to register for an online class through Georgia Virtual Schools for the Spring term is February 8th.  If you are interested in signing up for an online class, see your counselor.

Any seniors who have not yet successfully completed a portion of the Georgia High School Graduation Test will re-test in March.  The March week of testing is the last testing opportunity for seniors before graduation.  If any student is unsure of their test circumstance, see your counselor or graduation coach.

Seniors needing to complete credits for recovery through PLATO should be working diligently at home and in the PLATO lab.  Graduation is just around the corner!

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS:

Colleges prefer applications to submitted online.  Make sure your senior is mindful of application deadlines.  Once an applicaiton has been submitted, supplemental documents such as transcripts and letters of recommendations should be sent.

TRANSCRIPTS:

Seniors should request official transcripts in the Counseling Office.  The cost is $2.00 per transcript and students must provide a stamped (we recommend two stamps), addressed envelope.  Please allow 10 school days to process.

COUNSELOR EVALUATIONS:  If your senior also needs a counselor evaluation completed, students should attach the evaluation form to the transcript request form.  Please allow at least 10 school days to process.

SAT/ACT scores:  All SAT/ACT exam scores must be sent through the College Board directly.  Students receive 4 free score reports to colleges at each test administration.  A fee of $10.50 applies for additional score reports.

Please note, students with free or reduced lunch status are eligible for up to two SAT/ACT fee waivers throughout their high school career.  Your student will have to come by the counseling office to request a waiver.
