SPARTANS NOTES!
|

Greeting Spartans!
What a great start to school! We were excited to see so many parents at Curriculum night and again at the PTSA sponsored Junior/Senior information session. The Governance Board continues to advance through the charter renewal proposal process sitting for the FCS interview on September 14th. We are disappointed that our SAT scores continue to fall, the administration and Governance Board are collaborating to analyze data and school practices to address this concern while we celebrate making adequate yearly progress (AYP) along with our increases on the GHSGWT (Georgia High School Writing Test), GHSGT (Georgia High School Graduation Tests), six of eight EOCT (End of Course Tests) and the ACT for 2010-11 school year.
Our visual arts students are working with artist in residence, Jeff Mather, as a part of the Friends of North Springs vision 20/20 campaign. The NSCHS drama department fall production, Imaginary Invalid , opens October 14th. The Lady Spartan Volleyball and Softball teams are enjoying outstanding seasons, come out and cheer them on. The junior varsity Spartan Football team celebrated big wins over Riverwood and Decatur. Saturday September 24, NSCHS Executive Counsel Sponsors our annual homecoming dance in the gym, this year's theme is Candy Land. Friday September 23 the varsity Spartan football team takes on Druid Hills for homecoming in Thermopylae Stadium, don't miss it!
Until Next Month,
Lisa Stueve
A Special Note about the NSCHS Attendance Office
Please remember that students cannot be checked out from school after 3:00pm each day. This is to ensure that you are able to navigate away from campus prior to bus and parent pick-up traffic and that our buses are able to line up appropriately and safely in time for dismissal.
It is helpful for both you and your student if you send in a written permission to check-out. Students should report to the attendance office prior to school with their notes and will be provided a pass for dismissal eliminating the need to come into the building or disrupt instruction to remove your student for check out.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
SPLOST IV Message
Did you Know?
SPLOST has funded capital needs in Fulton County Schools since 1997. To accommodate growth of almost 35,000 students SPLOST has funded 37 new schools (with two being built currently) and 28 additions. Past programs were about new schools; however the upcoming SPLOST is about continued investment in our current inventory to maintain optimal conditions for learning. It's also about expanding technology capability of our existing classrooms. Get complete detail about SPLOST IV at fultonschools.org. Direct questions to SPLOSTinfo@fultonschools.org or call us at 404-669-8982.

From PTSA Important News about SPLOST IV
Attend Community Information Meeting October 5 9am at NS
| |
It's important to your school, your student, your neighborhood and your stake in the community (including property values) to understand the issues involved. Did you know that voting to approve SPLOST IV in the general election on November 8 does not add any additional sales tax to existing rates in Fulton County and City of Atlanta, but simply continues the current penny sales tax approved by voters for SPLOST III? North Fulton Council PTA and Fulton County Schools are presenting information to the community at a special meeting hosted at NSHS on Wednesday, October 5 at 9am. Invite your Homeowner Association representatives, fellow parents and neighbors to attend this informational meeting. For additional SPLOST IV information, click the following link http://www.fultonschools.org/SPLOST4/Default.aspx, which includes a link to how SPLOST IV funded projects will impact the North Springs Cluster of schools.
Your tax dollars at work at NSCHS We're excited about the proposed major renovations that will take place at North Springs beginning next summer 2012 to include the front of the school and parking lot with funds collected from SPLOST III. |
Robotics Event - Sept. 27
| Tuesday, September 27 from 9:00am to 4:00PM at North Springs Charter High School, students will explore hands-on robotic exhibitions. That evening from 6:00PM to 7:30PM, our city and business leaders will attend a VIP reception where Dr. Lonny Johnson, CEO of Johnson Research and Development Co. and creator of the Super Soaker, and Dr. Neil Shah, robotic surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital, will address how STEM education and STEM careers are the essential pipeline for our students to have successful futures - and, ultimately, for our country to remain competitive in the global economy. Following the presentation, guests will receive a private tour of the robotic exhibits.

| Potential Drivers Please Note! |
Students have 3 days to turn in a note for an excused absence from the date of absence. This is important because students may not get a Certificate of Attendance needed for a driver's license if they have more than 10 unexcused absences in a school year. Students should fill out a form in the front office requesting a Certificate of Attendance and expect a 2 day turnaround. Their health teacher will have the ADAP form for alcohol and drug awareness.

Chinese Exchange Students to visit North Springs
|
North Springs in partnership with the City of Sandy Springs is looking forward to the anticipated October 16, arrival of six high school students from Taicang, China, and chaperones for a two week visit. Several North Springs families have volunteered to host the students in their homes and others have volunteered to be chaperones for special tours and events the school and the city are planning. Come spring Taicang will return the hospitality when six Spartans and chaperones will travel to our sister city in China . It is hoped this will become a model for continued exchanges for our students and our two cities.

Governance Board/Charter Renewal Update
| |
We will keep you informed of the charter's progress as information becomes available. Here is the latest news regarding our petition for charter renewal.
The Charter Renewal Petition has been recently reviewed by various Fulton County School personnel and members of the Governance Board (GB) have gone through the initial interview process. NSCHS has now received an "Initial Memo" from Laura Stowell, Charter Liaison, documenting feedback from the evaluators. The GB has two weeks to respond to these comments and questions and edit the petition if desired. The final edited petition will then go to the Fulton School Board for approval. If approved in October, it will move to the State for review and State approval. Governance Board meets next on Thursday, October 13, @ 7am in A113; the meetings are open to the public.
