REFLECTION
| |
The 2012 budget is not yet fully pledged. It's still a little early for that.
We don't yet know which set of renovation plans will be implemented. It's still a little early for that, too.
But I don't want to wait to express my gratitude and admiration (as well as a healthy dose of amazement) for the support you have already shown. In 2012, Ravensworth Baptist Church will continue to be a voice and a presence, offering blessing and ministry, and there will be a significant renovation of the building that is the "headquarters" of our church. You are a generous and stout-hearted congregation of full-fledged disciples, and I have never been more proud to be your pastor. That feeling deepens and grows inside of me with each passing year.
Someday we will step aside, and a new Ravensworth congregation will carry on. Of course, that does not happen all at once. But it is not someday yet, and there is not another congregation anywhere that I would rather serve and be in community with than the one whose faces I see Sunday after Sunday, week after week. Together, we are learning and experiencing what it means to follow Jesus.
Our Epiphany worship during these Sundays has been taking us to the Sea of Galilee-- both the shoreline where disciples walk with Jesus, and the water where they get in the boat with him. As we follow Jesus, it is a privilege and joy to be walking in your company and riding the waves with all of you.
We are in this boat together. And I thank God for all of you!
Steve

BUDGET PLEDGE UPDATE
|
Pledge Goal: $365,000
We are moving steadily closer to our goal! As of Tuesday, January 31, we have received 31 pledges and $208,240. Of the 31 pledges, four are from people pledging for the first time.
Our target date for having all pledges in is Sunday, February 12. This will give us the best information we can have to present a draft budget to the church on February 26.
Thank you for your faithfulness!

Help Feed the Homeless on February 21
The Bailey's Crossroads Community Shelter provides daily breakfasts, lunches, and dinners to the participants in Fairfax County's hypothermia program, which continues through March 31. The ACCA church network is one of the volunteer providers of meals. We will prepare 50 bagged lunches and dinner for 50. The Tuesday Mornings group will help make the sandwiches. We need a couple more folks to help with cooking the dinner Tuesday afternoon. We will deliver the food to the shelter by 4:30 p.m. Those interested may also help serve the meal at the shelter at 5:15 p.m. Can you help? Judy Carfagno and May Gallo have already volunteered. If interested, please contact Bob Sampson (703-321-7794) or Carol Weber (703-370-0521). We'll be making Patti Brockmeier's delicious Hobo Stew. (But we'll change the name!)
Thank you.

SMALL GROUPS
| |
Kick-off Event -- Coming in March
We don't have a precise date yet, but following worship one Sunday in March, we will hold a brief meeting to highlight our small groups and give you an opportunity to sign up for one. The facilitators of the three groups that are forming (see below) will describe their groups and field questions about them. Watch for more information, including a firm date for this event, in the next newsletter.
We have facilitators for three different groups so far: Lydia Mercado will serve as the facilitator of a group that will explore different models and methods of prayer. Click here to see a description of this group. Kay Tarazi will facilitate a covenant discipleship group. Click here to see a description of this group. Jeff Van Ness will convene a group that, although technically more of a working group than a traditional small group, will work on developing a Continuity of Operations Plan for our church to prepare for possible disruptions caused by natural disasters or other catastrophic events. Click here to see a description of this group. If you have questions about any of these groups, or think you might be interested in facilitating a different group, contact Bob Turner. PRAYER GROUP |
Prayer + . . . Connecting with God
In this group, which will hold regular two-hour meetings over a six-month period, participants will seek to enrich their spiritual lives by exploring different ways to pray. Meeting time options are:
- Saturdays, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.;
- Saturdays, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.; or
- Sundays, 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
The first meeting will take place at the church on Sunday, March 25, at 4:00 p.m.
Group meetings will follow a pattern of study, sharing, and practice. Participants will read excerpts from books on prayer and the Bible, read prayers written by others, and write their own prayers. The goal is to observe how one's practice of prayer affects the quality of one's daily life. Group members will encourage one another to pursue a daily practice of personal prayer in whatever form that may take.
If you are interested in learning more about this group, email me, call me at 703-501-3381, or come to the small group kickoff meeting in March.

COVENANT DISCIPLESHIP GROUP
|
Spiritual Discipline and Christian Formation through Mutual Accountability
In this group, participants will seek ways to support each other in deepening our relationships with God as we follow the path of Jesus. To begin, the group will meet monthly for one hour to form a covenant of promises to God and each other; then in subsequent meetings will share successes and challenges in keeping the covenant. The group creates the covenant through personal and group discernment and mutual consensus. It will contain promises of worship and devotion as well promises of compassion and justice.

CONTINUITY OF OPERATIONS PLANNING GROUP
|
Keeping the Church Going in an Emergency
During a emergency or disaster, a church needs to have plans in place that will ensure normal operations continue as smoothly as possible. Emergencies we may face include fires, severe weather (blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, earthquakes), traffic accidents, widespread electrical outages, terrorist attacks, or even our renovation project. While a church is not considered a business, it does provide critical services, employs staff, requires consistent income, has payments due each month, and requires that communications systems be maintained at all times. Any or all of these services may easily be disrupted during a disaster or other emergency that affects the church or community. A Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) attempts to ensure that critical services and activities will continue after a disaster, and that there is a plan to resume normal functions as soon as practicable.
A COOP for Ravensworth will include plans, measures and arrangements to ensure that we are able to continue to deliver critical services, and permit us to recover our facility, data, and assets. Included in this will be the identification of necessary resources to support business continuity, including personnel, information, equipment, financial obligations, legal counsel, infrastructure protections and accommodations, and most importantly, allow our ministries to continue.
As you can see, we have a large task ahead of us and we will gladly welcome your input and assistance.
