REFLECTION
In last Sunday's sermon, I mentioned that it had been one year since I left for my sabbatical in Galilee. The sabbatical committee will meet this week to discuss the final event paid for by the Lilly grant. I hope you will put on your calendar now (in red letters if that works for you) Saturday, September 25. Roy Oswald, a longtime senior fellow at the Alban Institute and the very best at what he does, which is the training of pastors and congregations, will lead us in an all-day workshop on congregational polarities. The topic will be relevant and timely to our congregation. This will be a real treat for us, and I hope you won't miss it.

Dr. Sondra Wheeler, a professor at Wesley Theological Seminary, was scheduled as one of the guest preachers during the sabbatical, and was unable to be with us because of her mother's death. I'm glad to say that she will preach at Ravensworth on Sunday, August 15. I am taking two weeks of study leave August 2-16, and will look forward to listening to Dr. Wheeler's sermon on our website.

During this time off, I plan to do some writing and sermon planning. In the fall, the sabbatical committee and I will write a final report to fulfill the Lilly Endowment's requirements. As you know, I made presentations on Galilee, Jerusalem, and the West Bank (with Jean, Kay, and G.J.). The sabbatical experience has appeared repeatedly in my sermons, as recently as Sunday, and it has often been present in my own preparation even when I did not mention it. I cannot read the Gospels and other Scripture without images, places, and people flashing into my mind, and believe me, that's a happy burden to bear.

I kept an extensive journal during my sabbatical, and took a lot of pictures. What I have not done is to sit with this powerful experience I had and write about it with no sermon or presentation to produce. I thought I would have by now, but I have not, and it feels important to me that I do this.

I will also look at the texts for the coming months, and do some sermon sketching. What works best for me is to write sermons the week they are preached, but it's very helpful to look ahead and see what's coming.

I may be expecting too much of these two weeks, but maybe not. I'll let you know how it goes.

Steve

waterballoonsYOUTH EVENT: WATER BALLOON WAR
Sunday, August 8
Those of you who attended Passportchoices in July will remember our aborted plan to hurl water balloons at each other on Wednesday evening. Well, we still have a sizable number of balloons, a ready water supply, and a big field behind our church, so...I declare a water balloon war!

water balloonsFollowing the worship service on August 8 (which begins at 10:00 a.m., remember), we will divide into teams and start soaking one another. Remember to bring a swimsuit or some old clothes and a towel to church with you. We'll change clothes and have at it. Anyone else in the congregation who wants to join us is welcome to do so.

I would like some volunteers from the youth group to help fill the balloons on Friday, August 6 (I'll be out of town on Saturday). If you can help, email me or call the church office (703-200-5866).

TRANSPORTATION
Are you willing to pick someone up or take them home from church?
armchairSeveral of our members continue to need assistance to get back and forth to our church services. We greatly appreciate all those who have provided rides in the past and want them to continue. We are also seeking additional volunteers to help share in this important work. If you can pick up and/or return people who need a ride to services at Ravensworth, please contact Adrian Ashley (703-968-4257).
CHURCH RENOVATION PROJECT

Your Help and Input Needed!

In preparation for the church renovation project, we need to empty some storage spaces to start moving the Parents' Day Out (PDO) office during August so they will be ready for the start of the school year in September. Also, we need a clearer understanding of the specific storage needs of different groups in the church.

 Renovation

To that end, as representative of the Renovation Working Group, I plan to be at church after worship on Sunday, August 1, and from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, to meet with anyone who has storage in the Sunday School workroom, the preschool storage spaces, the upstairs rooms, the banner space, the closets, and any other storage space besides the official offices and library. I will be assisting in moving things about and clearing out items no longer used.

So please, if you or any committee to which you belong stores items in any of the places listed above, join me, or call (703-941-1558) or email me your needs or concerns.

Thanks,

Patti Brockmeier

ACCA PANTRY
The need is still there
On behalf of ACCA, I want to thank Ravensworthers for keeping the food basket filled with non-perishable items. This is truly a needed local mission. You have done this with pleas in the newsletter and without pleas in the newsletter. Through the winter and spring the response from grocery cartthe entire community (churches, schools, scout groups, others) has been inspiring and the ACCA food pantry has been full. Right now though, with the summertime lull, the pantry has become low again. Let us keep our regular donations coming and even shop a little extra for the needy in our community and we will get through the summertime lull. Items needed include: canned fruit, jelly, peanut butter, crackers, spaghetti sauce, jello, pudding, coffee,  bags of rice, bars of soap, and paper products.

Thank you,
Bob Sampson
ACCA Representative
HERNANDEZ FAMILY
A Volunteer Opportunity

Dina Hernandez's spirit is so beautiful and strong--as much as that of the new baby, little Miqueas! Those of us who visit at the Hernandezes' home have very much enjoyed seeing the family and drawing strength from each of them. Bea Kirby is Dina's deacon and Clarence Hoop is Julio and Lisa's deacon. Bea and Clarence are doing a masterful job of helping: Bea coordinates food and Clarence takes food every week and mows the lawn when it needs it. And thank you to food deliveryeveryone who has helped so far, includingBea Kirby, Clarence and Lucy Hoop, Steve Hyde,  Bob and Sarah Turner, Carol Weber, Bob Sampson, Cathy Baskin, Meaghan Manley, Natalie and Rachel Turner, Doris Van Gorder, Judy Carfagno, Dave Farmer, Dot Murphy, Nancy Hall, Lill Wachter, Geneva, Emily, and Katie Pope, and Kay and G.J. Tarazi--by my count 23 persons so far! And many of these listed have provided help more than one time.

Right now, members of the Ravensworth community are providing three meals a week. We also volunteer two evenings a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 5 to 8 p.m. to help around the kitchen (serving the evening meal, cleaning up afterward, watching children, etc.). Usually two persons go together to do this.

Please volunteer for these two needs (meals and/or housework). Bea and Clarence will each be away some days in August. We are trying to plan two weeks in advance so we can let the family know what to expect. Contact Bea Kirby (703-978-8157) or Kay Tarazi (703-917-1560), who is helping Bea coordinate our church efforts for the Hernandez Family.

Thank you,

Kay Tarazi

QUIET SPACE
Changing Table Needed

A quiet space for new babies and parents has been established in room 21for use during the worship service. Presently, there is a rocking chair and a privacy screen in a corner of that room. It would be helpful to have a changing table there, too. If you have a folding changing table you can donate, please contact Geneva Pope (703-569-4751).

INTERFAITH BOOK DISCUSSION

Stones into Schools book coverStones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan and Pakistan, by Greg Mortenson, will be the subject of an interfaith book discussion held at Ravensworth on August 8 from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. This is Mortenson's second book about his amazing work and that of his non-profit organization, the Central Asia Institute (CAI), to promote peace through education by establishing more than 130 schools, most of them for girls, in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. It isn't necessary to have read his first book, Three Cups of Tea, to understand and appreciate Stones into Schools.  If plan to attend, please contact Geneva Pope (703-569-4751).

QUARTERLY BUSINESS MEETING

Draft -- Quarterly Business Meeting Minutes
Ravensworth Baptist Church
July 25, 2010
  1. Prayer. Holly Hollman opened the meeting in prayer at 6:33 p.m., at the request of Church Moderator Jay Smith. There were 25 members present: Pastor Steve Hyde, Associate Pastor Bob Turner, Jay Smith, Holly Hollman, Nancy Hall, Gail Fewell, Roy Fewell, Homer Christensen, Charlene Christensen, Dave Pope, Carol Weber, Nancy Koehler, Cathy Baskin, Sandi Pope, Lydia Mercado, Clara Mercado, Ray Roan, Bob Sampson, G.J. Tarazi, Kay Tarazi, Geneva Pope, Bea Kirby, Nancy Alsheimer, Ann Hatcher, and Larry Hatcher.
  2. Minutes of April 25, 2010, Business Meeting. The "s" should be deleted from "eight" on page two, "Old Business." As it seems that the first quarter minutes were not sent out from the church, comments and corrections may be tended, and are to be sent to the clerk at nancyITC@aol.com
  3. Reports.
    1. Membership. (Recorded in April minutes: "The Church Clerk, Nancy Hall, noted that it had not been reported how Dina Hernandez had been presented for membership to the church, by transfer of letter or by requesting baptism. It was decided that since she had been at Columbia Baptist, the RBC staff should request a transfer of letter from them." Done?) The clerk mentioned that RBC has not been requesting or receiving letters of transfer, the only other way to join the church besides baptism. At least one family is maintaining their relationship with their previous church, so it would be instructive to find out if indeed they have transferred their letters to RBC.
    2. Deacons: Chair Lydia Mercado presented a handout, "Oversized expectations: A small congregation gets megachurched," by Kyle Childress. The report included the diaconate's goals of encouraging congregational openness and friendliness, showing love and caring to our members and friends, and fostering spiritual deepening through worship and spiritual formation.
    3. Education: Chair Nancy Hall reported that the Commission is updating the Child Abuse Prevention Policies and Procedures. We have the opportunity to have it reviewed by Fairfax County as well. It is the Commission's job to ensure that all at RBC have the CAPP training. We will continue the August 9:30 a.m. light breakfasts for five Sundays. Adrian Ashley will coordinate the first one; Cathy Baskin is working on the second Sunday; Philippians class has taken the third week assignment. Hot beverages will be inside, light refreshments will be on the Narthex porch, weather permitting.
    4. Parents Day Out: This is PDO's fortieth anniversary. RBC will celebrate with them in October by inviting the staff to worship and a reception afterward. PDO has requested a directional sign to make their presence known.
    5. Missions: Dave Pope reported in Chair Beth Moffett's absence. The Commission discussed a proposed change in the policy on providing monetary assistance to needy persons presenting themselves to the church. The current policy will stand. Recipients will receive a printed handout listing local support resources (including the ACCA food pantry) in addition to Safeway coupons.
    6. Administrative and Treasurer: Chair Holly Hollman commented on an item under New Business, "Interpretation of Contract Policy." According to Treasurer Larry Hatcher, giving is up eight percent. The Commissions have been managing expenses well. The balance as of June 30 is $83,205.58. Annandale Play Care is still behind in their payments, but has been sending some monies forward, in the amount of $7,324.27 for the second quarter.
    7. Leadership Council: Chair Ann Hatcher reported that the LC is working on fall programs. Roy Oswald will offer a presentation on "Congregational Polarities" on September 25.
    8. Outreach Task Force: Bob Turner reported that the ad hoc committee is still meeting as a task force. Holly asked for a final report to capture the lessons they learned and the data they had gathered.
  4. Old Business. None.
  5. New Business.
    1. Interpretation of Contract Policy. Dave Pope questioned when the LC needs to approve contracts. How does "direction of the church" occur? The language in the proposal will be reviewed for clarity.
    2. Insurance Proposal. Cathy Baskin, representing Admin and Personnel, presented the proposal. A robust and productive discussion followed. The proposal was for RBC to pay 50% of any full-time employee's medical insurance costs and that employees being paid for less than full-time work could be covered under the church's group policy but at their own expense. An informal vote expressed the feeling of those present that 50% would NOT be sufficient. The Committee will continue to work on the proposal and present it at another time.
  6. Closing Prayer. Steve Hyde closed the meeting in prayer, after many cares and concerns were expressed, at 7:59 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy D. Hall, Church Clerk
