PLEDGE UPDATE
Let's Get Those Pledges in and Get Our Budget in Place!
Pledge Sunday was last Sunday, February 28, and we had a total of 54 pledges submitted, totaling $294,249. More than 60% of these folks increased their pledges from 2009! The increased pledges also include five who did not pledge last year. There are 16 who pledged in 2009 but have not yet pledged this year. There is still time! If those 16 pledged the same as last year, we would get an additional $71,846. If many of them can increase their pledge and if others who didn't pledge last year but are faithful contributors to the church pledged what they already give, we can continue, as Steve said, to "avoid the drama" and be thankful for the ability to get our new budget in place soon.

You can submit your pledge by placing your pledge card in the box in the Narthex or mailing it to the church office, by emailing me, or by calling the church office (703-941-4113) and verbally submitting your pledge (to me). If I am not available at the time of your call, you can leave a voice mail message in my mailbox.

We want you to consider your pledge prayerfully, but we also hope you will submit soon to help the Administrative Commission prepare the new budget. The budget presentation by Admin will be after worship this Sunday; so if you haven't pledged yet but plan to, please do so as soon as possible.

Thank you,
Gail Fewell
Financial Secretary

2010 ANNIVERSARY GIFT
Contributions to the Hope Chest
When we established the Hope Chest as our 50th Anniversary celebration gift in 2009, we had no idea that the response armchairwould be so overwhelmingly positive! Last year, we received contributions of over $27,000 from individual donations. That abundant initial offering from RBC friends and members further inspired an anonymous donor to pledge $325,269 over the next seven years! The Renovation Working Group is meeting and gathering information, including input from the congregation, to insure that we are good stewards of this tremendous gift.

Because of your prayerful generosity, we have finally been able to install the new roof that has been needed for so long. (Sorry, no more leaky roof jokes!) We also donated $5,903 to ACCA in honor of our longtime partnership with them in local missions. The current balance in the fund is $11,017.

Again this year, contributions in honor of our 51st anniversary will be designated for the Hope Chest. We hope to replenish the funds so that we can continue to move forward in extending the life of our 50+ year old building, and making it better suited to our ministry and fellowship needs. Contributions can be sent to the church office or put in the offering plate. If you write a check, please note "Hope Chest" on the memo line.
IMPORTANT BREAD FOR THE WORLD EVENT THIS WEEKEND!
Offering of Letters Workshop, Saturday, March 6
We invite you to attend a workshop to equip our church to participate in Bread for the World's annual Offering of Letters campaign, this Saturday, March 6, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria (2701 Cameron Mills Road).

Marco Grimaldo, Bread's organizer for Virginia, describes the event this way:

"In the midst of a challenging economy, 2010 offers some important opportunities to help put food on the tables of low-income working families. We know that tax policies will be at Bread for the Worldthe center of an important debate, as tax credits passed in the 2009 Recovery Act are set to expire. Congress will decide which ones to renew or change and Bread for the World will push to strengthen and renew those policies that help struggling families.

"Bread for the World's 2010 Offering of Letters aims to protect and strengthen important tax credits (such as the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Child Tax Credit) that benefit low-income working families and help keep food on the table for many Americans.

"The workshop will give you the confidence to communicate effectively about the 2010 Offering of Letters. You'll have a chance to ask questions, learn about tools to help engage others, and fellowship with other Bread for the World supporters."

The 2010 Offering of Letters kit (which features a Ravensworth family, by the way) will be available at the workshop for a $5 suggested donation.

Click here for additional event information and directions. No RSVP required.

Thank you
Thank you to all of the Ravensworth Baptist Church family who prayed for my father, Colonel H. G. "Jack" Dalton, during his last illness and death. He had been healthy and alert until the last two weeks. We will have a celebration of his life in April and bury his ashes next to those of Mother, his wife of 65 years and his closest friend. In lieu of flowers we are asking you to make a donation to the charity of your choice. He died of complications from leukemia, so I will be contributing to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

SHOES FOR AFGHANISTAN'S CHILDREN
Help the RBC Children with a Special Mission Project The children of Ravensworth have begun a mission project to help the suffering children of Afghanistan. Please bring children's shoes of any type (new or gently used) to church and place them in the specially marked boxes at the entrances of the church. Collections will Send shoes to Afghan children!be made the next three weeks. Our connection in Afghanistan is Lt. Col. Burton Shields, brother of RBC member Carolyn Shields. Col. Shields, a battalion commander, has the daunting task of fighting insurgents while protecting the local community and maintaining good relationships with the citizens. He cannot provide gifts directly to the children, but must do so through community elders. While others are providing items like school supplies and food, our children decided to send shoes, as they are sure to reach those most in need. Shoes, boots, sandals--all are needed, as Col. Shields noted that most of the children go barefoot even in winter. As you shop in the coming two weeks, please watch out for bargain bin specials or secondhand children's shoes in any size in good condition.

Please email Beth Moffett, chair of the Missions Commission, if you have any questions about this mission project.

THE MAN WHO LOVED TO FLY
Written by Nancy Hall last August about her father.
Note: Colonel H. G. "Jack" Dalton died February 12, 2010.

What do you call him? He has answered to Sharlie, Daddy, Granddaddy Sam, Curly, Jack, Honore, Dalton, the Colonel, Papa, and probably a lot of other names we would rather not know about. If you know him even casually, however, you know how much he loved his flying days. I don't complain; I could have been named Corsair.

Born on a tobacco farm in Ashburn, Georgia, he would write a master's thesis entitled "An Evaluation of a Pilot Program in Military Leadership Education at El Toro" that would revolutionize the way senior Marine enlisted personnel were trained on the West Coast. Entering school around age nine, he would one day teach at the college level. As much as he loved the "Ma and Pa," he knew from a very early age that he was different. That knowledge would propel him to travel the globe, both for business and for pleasure.

One of his granddaughters, Jessica Hall, "interviewed" him recently. What was his favorite place to visit? He loved his and Mother's time in Australia. He admitted to having NOT visited Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. Where would he have spent more time visiting, if he could have? He said Moscow and Russia. His military career took him to exotic sounding islands like Kwajalein and Roi Namu, in addition to the more mundane Korea, Okinawa, and Japan. To his knowledge he is the only American to have flown the Mark Meteor 8 with the Australians in World War II. At the time of his retirement he had commanded fourteen squadrons, a record that might still hold. He retired as the Assistant Wing Commander, Third Marine Air Wing, El Toro, CA, after a 27½ year career. What fighter planes did he fly? He counted off the F4UA and 1A, FG7D, F4F4 and 4B, and F9F. He claims he never scratched a wing. He must have flown a whole lot better than he drove....

There was one "water landing" which I vaguely remembered. He says he was test piloting an SPD that kept stalling, so he set it down in the Pacific. What else does he remember about World War II? He was on some very remote islands. He spoke about the birds, lots and lots of birds, many we wouldn't have names for, as he would have been the first human there. One of his flying mates was Charles Lindbergh, the technical representative of an airplane manufacturing company. He loves to spin yarns of those days.

As his daughter, I have enjoyed watching the tenderness with which he treats his grandchildren. Each has a special nickname and, unabashedly, a place in his heart. Yes, Granddaddy Sam is a revered gentleman. We hope we have him for many more years!
