REFLECTIONS |
|
|
Carol Weber, the Communications Coordinator for the Leadership Council, has written about our transition into a new church year, and has included a look back that we can all read with gratitude and joy. It's tempting to say, "Fasten your seat belts," since we are moving into a very full season. In the coming weeks, you will hear about the work of the Renovation Working Group, stewardship, the 2010 budget (for our new fiscal year beginning April 1), a second sabbatical report, a Lenten study series, and more.
But I think Carol has the right idea. Pay attention to these weeks of transition, while remembering 2009 with appreciation for all the hard work in our congregation, and with gratitude to God for a year of amazing blessings. Steve
Transition 2010
It is that time again when RBC will be making the transition to a new year for Commissions and Committees. First, we would like to thank all of those who have served in leadership positions over the past year. Second, we would like to recognize the hard work of the Nominating Committee in coming up with an excellent group of leaders for the coming year.
It has been a good year for RBC in many areas, including an increase in our membership, income that met our budget, a wonderful sabbatical for our pastor, a meaningful retreat, several youth baptisms, a celebratory 50th anniversary, a productive Outreach Task Force, the Hope Chest contribution, and the formation of the Renovation Working Group. What a year!
The Leadership Council has decided to handle the transition a bit differently this year. Instead of a transition workshop, we are asking each Commission and Committee to have joint meetings of old and new members in February. This will be a time to provide some orientation to new members, review the past year, and talk about plans for the coming year. Commissions are encouraged to elect chairs and distribute and review handbooks at this time. In the quarterly report for the January 31 business meeting, each Commission will share their accomplishments and notable events from the past year, making it more of an annual report. Sometime in the spring, there will be a joint Commission meeting where there will be an opportunity for each Commission to share plans for the year and to receive input from the church.
For the Leadership Council,
Carol Weber

PROPOSED NEW LOGO |
|
The Outreach Task Force will re-introduce the logo we proposed last year for approval at the quarterly business meeting on January 31. First, we will take a ballot vote on whether or not to adopt the new logo. If that vote is affirmative, we will take a second vote, on the shape of the cross in the center of the logo. See below for the two options--a thicker or a thinner version of the cross. Thick cross: Thin cross: Please let us know what you think. Email Bob Turner or Dave Farmer to share your thoughts. Thank you. The Outreach Task Force

RENOVATION WORKING GROUP |

Report and Discussion
At the January 31 business meeting, the Renovation Working Group (RWG) will present a report on their recent work, including several conversations with a local architectural firm. There will be no discussion of the report at the business meeting, but the following Sunday, February 7, we will hold a congregational meeting following worship to discuss the report and entertain a draft motion from the RWG on how to proceed. Lunch will be provided on the 7th, for a small charge of $5.00. The RWG encourages everyone to attend both events. If, however, you are unable to attend the business meeting, be sure to pick up a copy of the RWG's written report on Sunday morning (in the business meeting packet) or next week (in the church office). On request, we can send you an electronic copy via email.

FROM THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE |

RBC Leadership Positions
The Nominating Committee, along with the entire congregation and staff, want to express appreciation to all of those who have served in the many support and leadership positions in our church during the past year. Your service has made a significant and important contribution to our life together as a vibrant, active, and loving community of faith. You should have received the draft of the 2010 Leadership Roster last week. If you did not, copies are available in the church office. Those approved at the business meeting this Sunday evening will begin their new terms on March 1. You will note that there are still a few positions that are unfilled and we ask that you prayerfully consider volunteering to serve in one of those positions. We are also preparing a list of people who would be willing to help a particular committee but cannot serve in an elected capacity this year. If you would like to respond to either of these opportunities for service, please email or call any member of the nominating committee. THANK YOU! | CALLED BUSINESS MEETING |
|
|
The following minutes are from the called business meeting, January 24, 2010.
The meeting was called to order by the Leadership Council chair, Marshall Marks. The meeting opened at 12:15 p.m. with 43 members present. The proposal was presented by Brad Moffett, chair of the Grounds Committee.
Background: The Senior Zoning Inspector from Fairfax County on November 17, 2009, sent RBC a notice of multiple violations of our signage from that allowed under the church's 2003 Special Exception with the County. We were given 72 hours to respond or face a penalty. Our immediate response was to remove all temporary signs and de-light and decommission others. Now we must get permits to maintain our main sign in the front of the church and our new sign in accordance with the Special Exception. The Special Exception was submitted by Annandale Play Care in 2003 to increase the Annandale Play Care enrollment from sixty to ninety and, as part of that application, we agreed to additional restrictions on signage, including, among other things, the elimination of pole-mounted and lighted signs. Although the issue is being researched further, it appears right now that submission of an amended Special Exception or a new one (to allow lighted signs) would cost $15,885. The Grounds Committee is not pursuing that option and we are focused only on getting the permits to address all the outstanding issues from the County's letter. The motion as proposed read:
"The congregation authorizes the Grounds Committee to submit permits on the church's behalf to Fairfax County to bring the front sign and the new sign into compliance with County Zoning requirements and to allow the Committee to refurbish and modify the front sign to incorporate Korean Congregation text onto the sign."
The motion passed, with discussion. Brad Moffett was thanked for his hard work. The meeting adjourned shortly thereafter. Respectfully submitted, Nancy D. Hall, Clerk

| UPDATE FROM THE SABBATICAL COMMITTEE |
|
|
Conversations with Steve Hyde Between now and the end of Lent, Steve will be meeting with adult Sunday school classes so that we can share with him our responses to the sabbatical activities and sermons by guest preachers, as well as any other reflections on what we learned about ourselves while he was away. Those who are not regular attendees at Sunday school are welcome to join in any of the discussions that will take place. We would like to give everyone an opportunity to take part! The first small group will be Sunday, February 7, in Room 17, as the Genesis and Sojourners classes will combine for discussion that day. The Philippians and Moore Classes will combine for a discussion on February 21. Steve will schedule a Sunday morning with the Friendship class soon. He will also share with the Tuesday morning Bible study group.
Here are some questions that might help get these conversations started:
- Which activities were you able to attend?
- Were any of the activities or sermons particularly meaningful to you? If so, which ones, and in what way?
- Are there any of the sabbatical activities you would like to see us continue?
- What things do you think we learned about ourselves individually or as a congregation while Steve was away? Were there any surprises?
- What person/s helped you believe you were still part of a strong community of faith while Steve was away?
- One of the themes of Steve's journey and ours was "What makes your heart sing?" Did any of the activities help you learn more about that for yourself?
- What, if any, impact do you think the sabbatical had on our congregation? On Steve?
- Any other thoughts or reflections you would like to share with Steve about the sabbatical?
For the discussions, we will have a list of activities, preachers, and their sermon titles, to help jog our memories. You also can access sermons on the web site. We appreciate your willingness to participate in this process!

| ACCA ASSISTANCE |

Hypothermia Program
Now that winter is here, ACCA churches are participating in a program to keep homeless people fed and warm. This is an opportunity for us to help. Any individual or class interested should let me know or sign up on the Missions Commission bulletin board. We have begun collecting warm clothing, so lay aside pieces of cold weather gear, put them in a plastic bag marked "ACCA," and leave the bag beside the ACCA food basket in the church hallway. Opportunities to help with food include preparing dinner for 50 people (to be served at the Bailey's Crossroads Shelter), preparing 50 brown bag lunches, or donating cold breakfast items for 50. The clients take an evening meal at the shelter, spend the night at an ACCA church, and are given breakfast and a bag lunch in the morning at the church. This program continues through March 31.
