Fun Facts About MN

* During the winter of 1888, residents of St. Paul built an ice palace at the winter festival. Before melting, it was considered one of the largest buildings in the world, measuring 14 stories high and covering an acre of land.
* Minnesota has 90,000 miles of shoreline, more than California, Florida and Hawaii combined.

Landscape Tip of the Month

Fall Planting: Perennials may be safely planted up to October 15th in an average growing season; this will allow enough time for the roots to establish before the ground freezes. Make sure that you continue to water them right up until the ground freezes.
October 6th is the average frost date for the Twin Cities.
Fall Clean-up: Cut perennials to the ground after hard frost.
Perennials that you may choose to leave up for winter interest include: Grasses, Astilbe, Echinacea - Coneflowers, Liatris - Blazing Star, Perovskia - Russian Sage, Rudbeckia - Black Eyed Susan, Sedum, and Hydrangeas.

1882 Electric lights began when an associate of Thomas Edison hand- wired 80 red, white and blue bulbs and wound them around a rotating evergreen tree. The first lighted Holiday tree was erected on the white house lawn in 1856 by President Franklin Pierce, and has become an annual tradition ever since.

4-SEASON CONTAINER DESIGNS....

We would like to introduce to all our residential and commercial clients SEASONAL CONTAINER GARDEN DESIGNS! We can creatively design and install decorative seasonal container plantings for winter, spring, summer and fall.
With 6 months of snow on the ground, let's face it; winters in Minnesota are just way too long. Does cabin fever seem to set in earlier and earlier? Are you seeing nothing but white? Why look at empty desolate containers out in the yard all winter long. Consider how a maintenance free winter container design can transform any space into an EYE CATCHING holiday display!
Imagine having a beautiful winter container design using rich reds, lush evergreens, with gold, yellow, orange or blue embellishments, artfully arranged and STRATEGICALLY PLACED to be enjoyed from the warmth and comfort of your home.
Why not add a burst of color to your patio or entryway, create a focal point, or make a stunning formal or casual statement. SET YOUR HOME APART from the rest and be the first in your neighborhood to have a creatively arranged hanging basket, urn or window boxes.
Our arrangements are guaranteed to brighten the holidays and all season long!
For more information, call today to request a consultation with our CONTAINER DESIGN SPECIALIST. We will review our unique, weather resistant containers, design and accessory options with you. We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Landscaping Question Corner....
Q. My shrubs grew a lot this summer; is it ok to trim them back this fall?
A. No, you should always avoid trimming shrubs in the fall. Trimming shrubs causes them to send out new growth, which will not have time to mature enough to make it through our cold winter, leaving your shrub more susceptible to winter injury. Trimming in the fall also cuts off the nutrients the shrub needs to make it through winter. However, It is ok to selectively remove dead, broken or diseased branches any time of year.
A general guideline for trimming shrubs is:
- Spring blooming shrubs like Lilacs, Chokeberry or Forsythia, prune them right after they finish blooming, but don't wait too long, so you don't cut off next years blooms.
- Mid-Late Summer blooming shrubs like Annabelle Hydrangea, Dogwood, or Ninebark, prune in late winter or early spring, before new growth/leaves appear.
