Dear Writing Project Folks,
We've got a lot of things going on this summer at the UMWP. Check out what is going on and join us for a great summer!

Summer Book Club
|

Want to get into a good book this summer and earn CEU credits for joining in a discussion? Join us as we move into a new program designed to feed the reader as well as the writer!
Choose a group from the options below and join us for the kick-off celebration. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, June 9th, at 11:00 am at the Newk's on University Avenue. Order your lunch and come to the party room (front room).
Our first meeting will last two hours, we will meet online twice in June on the UMWP Ning site (we will show you how) and then we will meet July 6th again at Newk's. Earn .6 CEUs and explore the fun of reading and chatting with your UMWP colleagues. Bring a friend from school!
Added bonus: The UMWP will buy books for the first ten folks to register for each group! Send your emails to eshelton@olemiss.edu
Group 1 - Children's Author Discussion - Led by Alana Reed Three Selections - These books will help teachers use children's literature as an innovative way to reinforce math skills. 1. If You Hopped Like a Frog by David Schwartz - this high-spirited book uses ratio and proportion to discuss how we would be if we were like animals. 2. The Greedy Triangle by Marilyn Burns - An offbeat introduction to geometry. 3. Night Noises by Mem Fox - this book is filled with vivid language and opportunities for teaching math.
Group 2 - Young Adult Book Discussion - Led by Michele Hancock Crank by Ellen Hopkins is about a teenage girl that completely changes in a short period of time. What changes her? Crank - better known to adults as crystal meth. Join me as we catch a glimpse of what teenagers are really faced with. This book is based loosely on the author's daughter's addicition.
Group 3 - High School/Adult Discussion - Led by Jacki Day Little Bee by Chris Cleave brings to light certain issues with globalization and with Little Bee's struggle to fit into a world that is hostile against her. . . the book explores universal topics such as coming to terms with the past, creating your identity, and many more.
Get hooked in the first line: "Most days I wish I was a British pound coin instead of an African girl. Everyone would be pleased to see me coming. Maybe I would visit with you for the weekend and then suddenly, because I am fickle like that, I would visit with the man from the corner shop instead but you would not be sad because you would be eating a cinnamon bun, or drinking a cold Coca-Cola from the can, and you would never think of me again. We would be happy, like lovers who met on holiday and forgot each others names."
Group 4 - Professional Book Discussion - Led by Ellen Shelton Teach Like a Champion: 49 Techniques
that Put Students on the Path to College by Doug Lemov offers K-12 teachers techniques to think about how to engage students in the classroom and move them toward critical thinking skills. Join me in my curiosity to see what Lemov offers in this book.
