Content-Area Writing
Writing in math, science, and social studies?  Isn't that an English teacher's job?  Yet, as educators, we know that writing well is an important skill in all subject areas. New and experienced K-16 teachers will engage in a collaborative approach to viewing the world through different lenses as they use writing in a variety of content areas: science, social studies, and math. The theory and practice of 'Writing to Learn' approaches will be examined through demonstrations and writing and sharing in disciplined-focused and grade-level groups.

Social Studies - February 13, 2010
Science - March 6, 2010

What's Next: Possibilities for Literacy and Content Area Learning

A National Reading Initiative Conference

March 5-6, 2010

Hotel Monteleone
New Orleans, Louisiana

This conference examines the intersections of interesting threads of work related to adolescent literacy and content area learning by addressing the following questions:
  • What is a text and what should we know about reading and writing texts in different disciplines?
  • What does strong interdisciplinary work look like?
  • What is the role of inquiry in content area learning?
  • What is discipline-specific in reading and writing?
  • What role do digital literacies play in content area learning?
  • How can writing project sites and schools organize to work toward deeper understanding and new practices?
Cost
The conference is free, but you must reserve your place by submitting a refundable deposit along with your online registration (see below). The deposit will hold your registration and will be returned to you when you sign in at the registration table on Friday, March 5. The 2010 Memorial Library Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education in New York City
July 6-19, 2010
New York, New York

The Holocaust Educators Network, in partnership with the National Writing Project, announces 24 fellowships for NWP teacher-consultants in the Rural Sites Network to attend the Memorial Library Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education in New York City. The program is open to NWP teacher-consultants in the Rural Sites Network and other teachers across the NWP who can show critical needs.

Using an inquiry-based approach, this program will encourage teachers to think creatively and collaboratively about methods and approaches for teaching the Holocaust. The seminar will consider how we engage students with difficult material such as hatred, prejudice, and state-sanctioned genocide, and how writing, dialogue, and inquiry can help us develop empathy and move us toward action. While the focus is on the Holocaust, attention will also be given to more recent genocides.

The seminar is sponsored by the Memorial Library and by Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Deadline: January 15, 2010. For more information, please follow the link: Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education
We hope to see you at another UMWP event soon!

Stay Warm!

Sincerely,
