National Day of Writing
An Invitation
The University of Mississippi Writing Project is partnering with the University Libraries, the UM Center for Writing and Rhetoric, NCTE, and NWP to bring the National Day on Writing to celebrate the National Day of Writing on October 20th!

We invite you to submit the pieces of your students' writing and your own writing to our dedicated gallery of writing to display on October 20th on the National Day of Writing at the University of Mississippi Gallery.   Submissions are due October 6 so that we may read and post for publication on October 20th.

Any format is welcome - poetry, prose, essay, journal, narrative, and even multimedia.  We want to capture and celebrate the writing being created in Mississippi.  So join us by letting us know that you are interested by sending an email to umwp@olemiss.edu .  We look forward to exhibiting your writing and your students' writing in our writing gallery!

Guidelines for Writers
While all writers should be able to express themselves and their point of view, certain kinds of writing simply do not belong in the National Day of Writing at the University of Mississippi Gallery. Therefore, please do not submit writing that...
  • is obscene, pornographic, or sexually explicit
  • depicts graphic or gratuitous violence
  • makes threats of any kind or that intimidates, harasses, or bullies anyone
  • is derogatory, demeaning, malicious, defamatory, abusive, or hateful
Prohibition of Unlawful or Harmful Content
Although as the host of the National Day of Writing at the University of Mississippi Gallery is not responsible for the conduct of writers who post here, we want the gallery to be a safe and educative site on the Internet. Therefore, in sending submissions posting to the Gallery, you may not:

  • violate any local, state, national, or international law or post any writing that would encourage or provide instructions for a criminal offense
  • impersonate any person or entity or otherwise misrepresent yourself, your age, or your affiliation with any person or entity
  • make available any unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, "junk mail," "spam," "chain letters," "pyramid schemes," or any other form of solicitation
All writing submitted to the National Day of Writing at the University of Mississippi Gallery will be reviewed "as is" and will not be modified or amended during the review process.

UMWP Annual Writing Competition

Lane Cover

The Second Annual UMWP Writing Competition is for students in grades 7-12 in the genres of poetry, short story fiction, nonfiction narrative, or expository essay. The writings should be inspired by the "Celebration of Place" theme. Entries will be judged on literary merit and usage/grammar appropriate to grade level.

Contest submissions are due Monday, October 26, 2009.  Students and teachers are invited to attend the awards ceremony that will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.  During this event student finalists will be asked to present their work to an audience of their peers, teachers, and parents.  All student participants are invited to attend regardless of their reading in the competition.  Lunch and a tour of the campus will be included in the day's events.

The top three students in each category will receive scholarships to one of the following University of Mississippi programs for middle and high school students: Summer Academy, Summer College, or Jump Start. (Please visit
http://www.outreach.olemiss.edu/academic_competitions/writing.html for more information concerning this program.)

Content-Area Writing
Writing in math, science, and social studies?  Isn't that an English teacher's job?  Yet, as educators, we know that writing well is an important skill in all subject areas. New and experienced K-16 teachers will engage in a collaborative approach to viewing the world through different lenses as they use writing in a variety of content areas: science, social studies, and math. The theory and practice of 'Writing to Learn' approaches will be examined through demonstrations and writing and sharing in disciplined-focused and grade-level groups.

Social Studies - February 13, 2010
Science - March 6, 2010
