2nd Annual Writing Competition

Writing Competition 09

The University of Mississippi Writing Project and the Division of Outreach will sponsor the second University of Mississippi Writing Competition. The theme for 2009 is "Celebration of Place." We will kick off the celebration with a teacher workshop on Place-Based Writing on September 16, 2009, at the Yerby Center on the Oxford campus.  The workshop cost per teacher participant is $75, which will include lunch and materials. We want to give you strategies to help your students as they think critically about their surroundings while honing their writing skills. Please note, that for an additional $20 fee, this workshop will qualify as ½ CEU credit.

This competition is for students in grades 7-12in the genres of poetry, short story fiction, nonfiction narrative, or expository essay. The writings should be inspired by the "Celebration of Place" theme. Entries will be judged on literary merit and usage/grammar appropriate to grade level.

Contest submissions are due Monday, October 26, 2009.  Students and teachers are invited to attend the awards ceremony that will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.  During this event student finalists will be asked to present their work to an audience of their peers, teachers, and parents.  All student participants are invited to attend regardless of their reading in the competition.  Lunch and a tour of the campus will be included in the day's events.

The top three students in each category will receive scholarships to one of the following University of Mississippi programs for middle and high school students: Summer Academy, Summer College, or Jump Start. (Please visit
http://www.outreach.olemiss.edu/academic_competitions/writing.html for more information concerning this program.)

Writing in math, science, and social studies?  Isn't that an English teacher's job?  Yet, as educators, we know that writing well is an important skill in all subject areas. New and experienced K-16 teachers will engage in a collaborative approach to viewing the world through different lenses as they use writing in a variety of content areas: science, social studies, and math. The theory and practice of 'Writing to Learn' approaches will be examined through demonstrations and writing and sharing in disciplined-focused and grade-level groups.
