Greetings!

Welcome to SmallCorp News, our bi-monthly effort to stay in touch and share some of the valuable tips and information we've accumulated in nearly 40 years manufacturing museum-quality display cases and picture frames.

If you find the newsletter useful, please feel free to pass it along to a colleague who might benefit from it, and if you have suggestions on improvements or future topics, don't hesitate to let me know.

Thank you again for your association with SmallCorp, we couldn't do it without you.

Best regards,
Mike Dunphy

Summer in Greenfield

The summer has been beautiful here in western Massachusetts, and we hope you're enjoying it as much as we are.  Some of us recently attended the 25th edition of our local music and arts festival, on the grounds of Greenfield Community College. (Molly has been a member of the board of the Greenfield Community College Foundation for more than ten years, and many of our staff have attended classes there).

SmallCorp Channel Fillets

Channel fillets are a tasteful and popular option for our Tig 7 and Tig 8 frames. They are 3/4" thick and are available in depths of 3/4", 1" and 1 1/2". Unfortunately we don't offer custom sizes.  Channel fillets consist of an aluminum channel (powdercoated to match the frame) with wood infill, screwed in place from outside the frame.  They are frequently used in very large frames for maps, quilts and flags, where gluing very long fillets may be a challenge.

We would be glad to answer questions about channel fillets any time.

Jewels, Gems and Treasures at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts

The MFA celebrated the opening of a new gallery last month, devoted specifically to the display of jewelry.  The Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Family Foundation Gallery will allow the museum to selectively display the best of its over 11,000 pieces of jewelry.

The current exhibit, "Jewels, Gems and Treasures: Ancient to Modern" is drawn from the MFA's collection and select loans. They range from a 24th-century BC Nubian conch shell amulet, to Mary Todd Lincoln's 19th-century diamond and gold suite, to a 20th-century platinum, diamond, ruby, and sapphire Flag brooch honoring the sacrifices of the Doughboys in World War I. Additionally there are many non-Western adornments, from feathers, claws, and mica appliqués to coral and rock crystal, serving a protective role, guarding their wearer from dangerous circumstances or malevolent forces.

SmallCorp is proud to have been involved in the launch of the new gallery.  We rehabilitated and updated historic stainless steel cases owned by the museum. We sealed the cases and performed air exchange testing, then installed LED spotlights to highlight the often tiny items on display.

Art and Textile Storage Racks

Re-introducing one of our best-kept secrets - the SmallCorp art and textile storage rack:

Textile Storage Cart

SmallCorp storage racks are great for maps, textiles and paintings

We custom-fabricate these versatile storage units to client specifications. The size and number of storage slots can be customized to fit your project or materials.  Racks are fabricated from 100% archival materials and feature locking casters.

They are frequently used to store textile and map collections.  We often provide aluminum honeycomb support panels and/or archival SmallTrays made to fit our racks.
