CCPF Chop
2010 Mission
to Nanchang

Our next Medical Mission has been scheduled to depart June 10th and return June 20th.  We have received clearance to return to The Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University.  Our Fall trip was postponed due to the outbreak of the H1N1 flu.
The children readied for our Fall mission have been waiting patiently for our care.

Did you know...
In 2009 CCPF saw a 75% increase in the number of donors supporting CCPF's work from 2008.

CCPF wishes you a very Happy Chinese New Year.  We hope your family shares health and happiness.

We also wish to thank all of our generous supporters during the last year.  Our year-end appeal was as robust as the year before, and our gratitude during these tough economic times is huge.
We look forward to a New Year of helping so many children.
Thank you.

Dr. Phil LaRussa To Set Up Clinic
LaRussa examines
Phil LaRussa, MD is known in many corners of the world for his efforts to treat children with HIV and other infectious diseases.  As a Pediatric Infectious Disease specialist, he has helped train physicians and set up clinics in Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Vietnam.  Now he is working to develop a CCPF Infectious Disease Clinic in China.  Dr. LaRussa recently visited two hospitals in Chengdu and Xian to discuss collaboration, and was met with great interest.  He believes that it will be possible to begin the training right away.   CCPF will be extending an invitation to Infectious Disease physicians in China for a Visiting Fellowship to the US this summer.
One CCPF Child's New Home
Grant with AbbyTwo years after CCPF treated Dang Fu Quan, this adorable child found new parents.  In August 2009, Kristina and Mark Schultz traveled to Henan to adopt Dang Fu Quan, their second child from China.  While the trip and the adoption process were not new to the Schultz's, the idea of adopting an older child with special needs raised a lot of questions.  Dang Fu Quan - now named Grant Fu Quan - was considered 'special needs" because of the severity of his cleft lip and palate.

In Kristina's quest to find out any medical information about her new son, she found CCPF.  In her e-mail request she stated, "Thank you for everything that you do for some of China's most needy children!  My husband and I traveled to Henan province this summer to adopt our son who just turned 3 years old.  We have very limited information and only a few photos from the time period his paperwork was processed for international adoption.  Yesterday I learned that New Hope Foundation was responsible for my son's care in Luoyang, and Dr. Joyce Hill noted that CCPF was responsible for my son's cleft lip repair during a mission trip to Nanchang in April 2007.  I am forever indebted and grateful for the team of volunteers who assisted my son and so many others.  I do not know what type of documentation you keep, but I was hoping you may have a bit more information or even a photo of my son.  I know it is a shot in the dark, but as a mother with a lot of unanswered questions I feel I must ask.  By the way, Grant Fu Quan is thriving in our family, and I think he has beautiful lips (not to mention the ability to eat properly) thanks to your organization!"

Most of the children treated during a CCPF mission arrive with virtually no medical history - many don't have documented birth dates.  We were delighted to provide information about Grant and to share that his plastic surgeon was Dr. June Wu.  We also had numerous photographs to send to Kristina -- including the one above with Nurse Abby Boyer caring for Grant.
According to Kristina, they are expecting to schedule Grant for major orthodontic work and more medical care to straighten his jaw and bite.  His big sister Olivia, 6 1/2, refers to Grant as her best friend despite some sibling rivalry for their parents' attention.
There are so many pieces to this puzzle," described Kristina.  Her sleepless nights found her doing endless internet searches for answers.  "I was so thrilled to find Dr. Hill and CCPF and to hear that you remembered Grant."  Kristina was happy to know about the excellent care her son received.
