Fuel Savings Myths?

Fuel gauge  In researching for this article I found many common myths contradicted each other so I have stuck to the most certain, yet little known topics.

1. Your engine should be warmed up before driving.  Truth is, running the engine for one minute is more than sufficient before hitting the road, any extra is just burning fuel, yet going no where.

2. Shutting off your engine and re-starting it uses as much fuel as idling for 5 minutes.  Most modern cars use less than 30 seconds worth of fuel to re-start.  Anytime you can shut your engine off for a minute (like waiting for a train) will save you money and cut a minutes worth of pollution from the air you are breathing.

3. Aftermarket devices can improve your economy.  Modern cars run very efficiently, the only way to improve your fuel economy is to sacrifice something else, usually the amount of pollution your car produces will go up with these devices as they can only work by "leaning out" the fuel mixture or altering the ignition timing and that raises Oxides of Nitrogen emissions and can increase internal engine temperatures, causing damage.

4. Air conditioning robs your fuel economy.  This one has some truth, at idle and low speeds your A/C can reduce economy, but at higher speeds, the difference is usually made up by the better aerodynamics from closing the windows to reduce the drag on your car.

5. Hybrid cars cost less to run.  While it's true some hybrids can get great mileage, it's not true for all of them.  The other factors to consider is the long term it takes to reach break even on the extra cost of buying the hybrid in the first place. Hybrids are expensive to buy and that has to be factored into the equation. They do emit less air pollution and that is nice.

In Case Of Emergency.

First Aid
One of the difficulties long faced by emergency services personnel is how to locate next of kin for (or obtain other necessary information about) a victim who is unconscious, dead, or otherwise unable to respond to questions. Even if the victim is carrying one or more forms of identification which have remained with him (such as a driver's license), those items don't necessarily provide information about where and how relatives or other interested parties can be reached, resulting in delays as officials try to track those people down through additional means.

This issue has been addressed through a variety of means over the years, as many people have taken to carrying lists of emergency contacts (and vital medical details) in their purses and wallets, or wearing items such as bracelets and necklaces with such information engraved on them.

Now, Bob Brotchie, a paramedic from England has launched a campaign to get people to store "In Case of Emergency" (ICE) information in an item that has become ubiquitous in many parts of the world: cell phones.

The scheme proposes that people store ICE information into the address books of their cell phones, where it can be retrieved by emergency workers.  Storing ICE Mom for example or ICE Husband and the contact numbers will clue in emergency personnel how to reach the people you would chose to be contacted if the unthinkable should happen.

Lifetime Warranty Plan

BG Logo
Have you ever heard an offer that was too good to be true?

Well we thought we had as well, but over the last few years we have been investigating a warranty offered by automotive lubricant and chemical company BG Products.

BG has been producing high quality products for over 35 years and a few years ago they started offering a 240,000 KM warranty on major vehicle components when you use their products to service them.  About a year ago they upped that warranty to the life of the vehicle.
This warranty is simple, administered by us and can be transferred to anyone in your family.

All that is required is to service your vehicle as normal using their product. The engine oil must be changed at least every 7,000 KMs and the other covered components every 60,000 KMs.

Covered components are:
  • Engine (Internally lubricated components)
  • Transmission (Inernally lubricated items)
  • Drivetrain (Differentials and Transfer Case)
  • Brake Calipers, Master Cylinder, ABS Hydraulic Components
  • Radiator, Water Pump, Heater Core
  • Power Steering Pump, Rack and Pinion/Gearbox

The only condition is that the vehicle servicing must start before 120,000 KMs have elapsed.
