The Great Tractor Race Video Story of 2012

       

       When you build a better mouse trap, what do you do next? If your mouse trap is really the fastest lawn tractor in its class, you prove it by racing the competition. Then, if you are the winner, you tell the world. This is the story of the mower that could. Husqvarna built it, raced it, and triumphed over John Deere. The entire episode was filmed for cable TV and the internet, all at the Gamka Sales Company Studios and sets in Edison, NJ. Thomas Alva Edison would have been proud!

      On May 22, 2012 the big test race came to be. Husqvarna's latest model tractor, the 24 horsepower, 48" cutting deck YTH24K48 was to be pitted against another well known contender, the John Deere D130, of nearly similar size. Both sport a $1,899 MSRP but the Husqvarna had been previously clocked at 7.4 mph, 35% faster than the other tractor mowers in its class. All that speed means that 35% more grass can be cut in the same time as a slower machine.

      An unbiased jockey and celebrity with her own TV shows, Gwendolyn Bounds, AKA Wendy, was one racer. She is a Wall Street Journal investigative reporter and was videoed mounted on the Husqvarna unit. When not test piloting, she is also the host and Managing Editor of "Lunch Break", a news and lifestyle show, she is the video star of "Off Duty", a daily lifestyle show, an author, etc. and can often be found wielding a chainsaw, weed-whacker or maul. Pitting his reputation against the Husqvarna speed demon, Larry Price (not the Price of the Price is Right) was selected to race the John Deere machine. Despite being Husqvarna's regional manager, Larry had pledged to do his utmost to unseat, figuratively speaking, Wendy.

      All of this took place on the lush front lawn movie set of Gamka's World Headquarters on May 22, 2012 between cloud bursts. Inside on the showroom set, details on the world's fastest lawn tractor's features and benefits were developed and filmed. Interviews with John Marchionda, Husqvarna's Marketing VP, and the latest star of the YouTube phenomenon (that would be me, your Editor), were made.

      To be fair, numerous heats took place, under the watchful eye of the video cam wielded by Jeff Cullen, who recorded the moments for posterity and a future "Off Duty" show. The starting flag came down, signifying the contest had begun and the making of history. The first race was more of a draw, much to the surprise of all except perhaps Larry on his John Deere steed. While it could not be proven to be Larry, a brief distraction enabled someone to throttle back the engine on the Husqvarna unit to half speed. The next heat was under the watchful eye of several self-appointed track stewards. This time the flag came down and the race began in earnest and without a handicap. The local Edison police pulled over to watch from the shoulder of the road but left after determining that no speed laws were being exceeded. Jeff ran up onto the Gamka building roof for the aerial shots.

      The outcome has been recorded for distribution and is posted on YouTube for the world to see. Just between you and me, we are hoping it will go viral. While I may be somewhat biased, my own cameo performance near the end is worthy of John Barrymore but does anyone remember him? Maybe Tom Cruise is more accurate. Let's start with what the heck is an XJH? Xpansion Joint Holder, of course!

The inventor decided that XJH is a lot easier to write out than Expansion Joint Holder and that is what XJH stands for. Using the XJH on sidewalks saves big money on expansion joint installation labor .  

What exactly does the XJH do?

The XJH allows a concrete contractor to install 1/2" X ANY Height expansion boards in minutes, not hours. This eliminates the need to use a backer board, metal stakes or driving rebar into the ground and attaching the expansion board to the rebar. It's a simple system of setting the pieces in the correct location, sliding the expansion board into place and adjusting for height and elevation.  We like to say, "Set it and forget it" because you pour concrete directly over the expansion board without having to come back and take excess material out of the concrete.

Why is the XJH better?

The traditional way of installing expansion board is very time consuming and costly to contractors. It is very difficult to install the expansion board and keep it straight and to the correct elevation. Using the XJH, the contractor can eliminate up to 75% of labor and money over the traditional methods.  What would take hours now takes minutes.  The other advantage is no more checker boarding concrete pours.  Using the XJH and the XJH4 (releasing this spring) a contractor can set up a complete patio or driveway with expansion boards in place and pour all the concrete eliminating a second day of pouring.

How does the XJH save you money?

The XJH offers HUGE labor savings.  In California, where the XJH was first introduced, an expansion joint that would previously take 60 minutes to do now takes less then ten.  What would cost on average $65 for a five-foot sidewalk set up - now costs $20.  A sidewalk pour that normally takes two days, now takes one.  We're talking saving contractors thousands of dollars over the course of a job.  That's huge in this competitive market and in the biddingprocess.

Now what?

This is one of those ideas that makes people ask themselves, "Why didn't I think of that?" It looks like book ends for expansion joint, no assembly, no batteries, no moving parts, no maintenance, so simple.
