Friday October 22, 2010 WIAAP Meeting
FREE Workshop: Interacting With the Media |
Registration is open for WIAAP's next meeting, being held at the Hilton Monona Terrace in Madison. After our brief business meeting we will provide a practical, hands-on workshop to improve your skills when you interact with the media.
Our members are frequently sough-after contacts for articles and interviews on vaccinations, sports injuries, breastfeeding, autism and health care reform, to name a few. Here are some of the questions we will answer during the seminar: - How safe are comments you make "off the record?"
- How do you look on camera?
- Are you confident you can keep a reporter on point while speaking to controversial issues?
- Do you understand the difference between a letter to the editor and an op-ed?
- When are you able to speak on behalf of your institution or the chapter, and when must you clearly identify your opinions as your own?
Gina Steiner of the AAP national's public relations office will be on hand to help you become familiar with print and on-air media and will give you inside information on how to best prepare for these important opportunities to advocate for Wisconsin's children.

ALERT: Honey-Filled Pacifiers |
Please be aware that a member of the Oklahoma Chapter of the AAP has reported that pacifiers containing honey are being widely sold in several area stores catering to members of theHispanic population. The honey is not pasteurized, and there is a risk of the child contracting botulism. Clearly, oral health and nutritional issues are also at stake. Oklahoma AAP writes:

"The physician member learned of the pacifiers from patients' mothers arriving at her clinic with pacifiers in use. She inquired. They are imported from Mexico. Mothers are encouraging other mothers to acquire the pacifiers for their children. Our physician went so far as to send one of her techs to a local store to purchase a pacifier. It is the one shown in this photograph. If you are interested or need them, I have photographs of the packaging and the bar code on the packaging.
"As we know, the Hispanic community is widely disbursed around the country. By the way, there was a recall of "Cachico" pacifiers in the Chicago area that contained honey in 2005, so this is not a new problem, maybe just new to our area." |
