Prevnar 13 Payment Concerns

As practices change over to Prevnar 13, the "Hassle Factor Forms" are coming in. Although the AAP (at state or federal level) cannot negotiate specific payments for practices, they continue to advocate for "fair payment". The AAP Business Case for Vaccines states that payment should be 17-28% above purchase price in order to cover overhead, including electricity, monitoring/temperature alarm equipment, insurance to cover loss, ordering, shipping and other costs. This is separate from the administration fee, which the AAP continues to advocate to be at least at Medicare levels.

Practice Management Online has resources for negotiating with insurance companies. Another good tool is the CDC Private Sector Vaccine Pricing List, including the best prices available. Prevnar is only available from one company (Wyeth/Pfizer) that does not work with group purchasing organizations (GPO's), but these can help with discounts on other vaccines. Consider joining SOAPM (Section on Administration and Practice Management) if you would like to learn how to maximize revenues for your practice.
