Because I Love HerCELEBRATE NATIONAL POETRY MONTH WITH YOUR LOCAL POETS

James Maughn is the curator of A New Cadence Poetry Series in Santa Cruz and poetry editor of Ping Pong, the literary arts journal of the Henry Miller Memorial Library. His first book, Kata, is an ekphrastic series working out of his study of traditional karate. "These poems are as disciplined as the katas which inspired them, and likewise as spontaneous and free!" - Chad Sweeney.

David Lau, a teacher at UC Santa Cruz and Virgil & the Mountain CatCabrillo College, serves as co-editor of the new journal, Lana Turner: A Journal of Poetry and Opinion. His new book Virgil and the Mountain Cat is both deeply lyrical and resistant, a poetry relentless in its invention and its stance against the apathy of convention and consumption.

Getting Green Done: Hard Truths from the Front Lines of the Sustainability Revolution (PublicAffairs)

Monday, April 6 at 7:30pm
 Getting Green Done
GET DOWN AND DIRTY ABOUT BEING GREEN

"Green" has finally hit the mainstream. In reality, though, many green-leaning businesses, families, and governments are still fiddling while the planet burns. Why? Because implementing sustainability is brutally difficult. In his witty and contrarian book, Auden Schendler, a sustainable business veteran foot soldier and Executive Director of Community and Environmental Responsibility at Aspen Skiing Company argues that the "green consultants" are clueless. There is a difference between feel-good gestures and the down-and-dirty work of going green, and we'll solve our problems only if we're realistic about the challenge of climate change. An eye-opening, inspiring work.
David Sibbald presents an evening of the poetry of Robert Burns

Wednesday, April 8 at 7:30pm

LOCAL SCOTTISH PIPER DAVID BREWER BRINGS THE MUSIC!

Because I Love Her

He will perform such famous Burns' poems as To a Mouse and Tam O'Shanter.

David Brewer is an award-winning bagpipe performer and teacher who has traveled the world with his pipes. Based in Santa Cruz, he is on the faculty of Community Music School and he is a member of the Celtic band Molly's Revenge.

Because I Love HerHOMEBREWED BEER: TASTES GREAT, MORE FULFILLING THAN TAXES

Brewing your own beer is an exercise in chemistry and creativity with a long, rich history and a great pay off: unique beers served as fresh as they get. Tonight the celebrated central coast Zymurgeeks shine! Mark Crain, Dave Bossie, and Steve Rannals will share their hard-earned knowledge about basic homebrewing, including equipment and techniques, and update us on some of the current issues facing established breweries--such as the looming Oregon beer excise tax. Five long-time homebrewers will be on hand with their latest creations, so sampling the beers and then questioning their makers is a must!

*The lecture is free. Purchase any "beer book" in stock or a $5 related purchase and join us for a tasting. Over 21 only.

Bishop image1 no textDISCOVER HOW SALVAGING, SWAPPING, AND REPURPOSING CAN SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR SOUL

Environmentalists, anti-consumerists, do-it-yourselfers, and bargain-hunters of all stripes: unite! Anneli Rufus (Party of One: A Loner's Manifesto; Stuck:Why We Can't (or Won't) Move On) and Kristan Lawson (frequent co-author with Rufus) invite readers to discover the most gratifying and realistic ways to go green, such as refurbishing a discarded wooden door into a dining-room table and find a bicycle on freecycle.org. Charting the history of scavenging and the world-changing environmental and spiritual implications of "Scavenomics," this work offers a framework for adopting scavenging as a philosophy and an eco-minded way of life.

MEET YOUR LOCAL WINERY

This is the second in our new Wine Lecture and Tasting Series: one Sunday per month, we highlight a local winery in an event that gives them a venue through which to share their history, their unique wines, and their views on what makes our area a blissful spot for vineyards and for the crafting of wines. A chance to bring-wine lovers & readers together for the enjoyment and education of both.

De Tierra Vineyards is located deep in the Corral de Tierra at the foot of Mount Toro between the Santa Lucia Highlands and the Carmel valley in Monterey--a spot described by John Steinbeck as the "pastures of heaven." Using no chemical pesticides at all, owner Tom Russell grows Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot grapes. Joining us today will be winemaker Dave Coventry who will tell us the story of DeTierra and lead us through the tasting of at least four of his favorite wines.

*A cheese & bread selection is included in the $8 participation fee. Please assure your spot by purchasing your ticket in advance. Participation may be limited--and the wines and conversation will be excellent! *Note Time.

Guitarist Kevin McDowell is the father of two daughters who together create a most extraordinary family trio of musicians: Dancing on Strings. Classical, jazz, flamenco--enjoy the live music before the wine event begins.

Mary Roach
Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex (Norton)

Tuesday, April 21 at 7:30pm

Because I Love HerSCIENCE & SEX GET SERIOUS AND SERIOUSLY FUNNY

"The funniest science writer in the country" (The New Yorker), Mary Roach has pondered the secret lives of cadavers (Stiff) and the odd possibilities of the afterlife (Spook) and now turns her outrageous curiosity and infectious wit on the most alluring scientific subject of all: sex. Research on sexual physiology has taken place behind the closed doors of laboratories, brothels, MRI centers, pig farms, sex-toy R&D labs, and Alfred Kinsey's attic. Mary steps behind those doors with investigative glee. Can a person think herself to orgasm? Can a dead man get an erection? Roach shows us why sexual arousal and orgasm, two of the most complex and delightful scientific phenomena on earth, can be so hard to achieve and what science is doing about it.

Real Food for Mother and Baby (Bloomsbury)

Sunday, April 26 at 5:30pm*
Because I Love Her
KEEP MOM & BABY HEALTHY WITH GOOD, SIMPLE FOOD

One of the great food activists and the former head of New York City's farmers markets (Greenmarkets), Nina Planck changed the way we view "old-fashioned foods" like butter with her groundbreaking Real Food. Then she got pregnant. Never one to accept conventional wisdom blindly, Nina found the usual advice about pregnancy and baby food riddled with myths and misunderstandings, and she now explains why traditional whole foods yet again. Pregnant women need meat and salt, not iron supplements. Meat, eggs and avocados are better than cereals for tiny tots. Even as she casts a skeptical eye on the conventional wisdom, Planck reassures by showing how to keep your baby healthy on good, simple food.

Geography of Bliss
NEW BOOK CLUB!

Even in a down economy, hope still springs eternal, thus our new book group modeled after the annual "Books for a Better Life" award.  Led by Capitola Book Café co-owner Wendy Mayer-Lochtefeld, we'll focus on the best writers in the crowded field of creative nonfiction, from memoir to travel, wellness, food, psychology, and spirit.

The first book we'll read is Geography of Bliss by Eric Weiner.  A self-proclaimed "grump" and very funny NPR foreign correspondent takes us on a yearlong, worldwide quest to uncover the particulars of the World Database of Happiness (based in Amsterdam, of course).  Visiting countries like Bhutan, Qatar, Iceland, and Moldovia, he uncovers the surprising ways in which places and psyches connect, and the unsurprising way that happiness everywhere seems to stem from how we relate to each other.

Because I Love Her
FOCUSING ON THE INSPIRING REAL LIFE FIGURE OF SERGIO VIEIRA DE MELLO

This month's selection is Chasing the Flame: One Man's Fight to Save the World by Samantha Power. Pulitzer Prize-winner and member of President Obama's administration, Samantha Power tackles the life of Sergio Vieira de Mello, whose work for the U.N. before his 2003 death in Iraq was emblematic of moral struggle on the global stage. Power has drawn on a staggering breadth of research to show us a heroic figure and the conflicts he waded into, from Cambodia's Khmer Rouge to the slaughter in Bosnia to the war-torn Middle East. A portrait of humanity and pragmatism.

Because I Love Her
CELEBRATE THE BEAUTIFUL YET COMPLEX RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MOTHER & DAUGHTER

In an era when the roles of mothers and daughters are constantly being questioned and redefined, Because I Love Her explores the deepest bonds and truths of motherhood by sharing stories and secrets of becoming a mother and grandmother.  What would you tell your mother if you could tell her anything? What do you want your daughter to know and pass on to future generations?

Join bestselling authors Joyce Maynard (At Home in the World) and local celebrity Karen Joy Fowler (Jane Austen Book Club; Wit's End) and other writers tonight as these women reveal what their mothers taught them, what they in turn hope to impart to their daughters and, finally, what they've learned as a bridge between the two.
