A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL THAT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

Cold Hands, Warm HeartDani was born with her heart on the wrong side of her body. In her fifteen years of life, she's had more doctor's appointments, X-rays, and tests than she cares to think about. Fourteen-year-old Amanda is a competitive gymnast,
her body in perfect health. The two girls don't know each other, don't even have any friends in common, but their lives are about to collide.  At once a romance, a medical thriller, and a meditation on hope, this life-affirming young adult (and young of spirit) novel grapples with illness, love, death, joy and friendship.
 Donate for Life
Santa Cruz author and editor of Bay Area Parent Magazine Jill Wolfson will be joined by representatives from the California Transplant Donor Network to share first-hand stories of those who have saved lives by becoming organ donors. And, since a new chance at life is a reason to celebrate, tonight's audience gets to share cake, too!

Out of Our Heads: Why You Are Not Your Brain and Other Lessons from the Biology of Consciousness
(Hill & Wang)

Tuesday, May 5 at 7:30pm
 Out of Our Heads
PHILOSOPHER-SCIENTIST TACKLES CONSCIOUSNESS

Our culture is obsessed with the brain-how it perceives; how it remembers; how it determines our intelligence and our morality. It's widely believed that consciousness itself, that Holy Grail of science and philosophy, will soon be given a neural explanation. Yet, frankly, we still don't have a clue about how and even if the brain makes us conscious. Alva Noë, a former UCSC professor of philosophy, is thinker of a new breed-part philosopher, part cognitive scientist, part neuroscientist. In this inventive work, he suggests that rather than being something that happens inside us, consciousness is something we do.

"A provocative and insightful book that will force experts and students alike to reconsider their grasp of current orthodoxy."--Daniel C. Dennett, Professor of Philosophy, Tufts University
GROW A FARMER: UCSC'S Farm & Garden Apprentice Program Extravaganza!

Help cultivate the next generation of organic farmers & gardeners by learning about the renowned UCSC Farm and Garden Apprentice Program.

There is a revolution underway, a real demand for organic food grown in sustainable ways, and yet our local fields that produce tomorrow's best farmers are under threat due to severe budget constraints. Thus, the Grow a Farmer Campaign: a nationwide effort to raise $250,000 to secure the future of the UCSC Apprenticeship farmer training program and on-site housing, begun by Alan Chadwick over 40 years ago.

Tonight, listen to the Bluegrass band STRUNGOVER and then be wowed by poetry greats Gary Young, Amber Sumrall, Barbara Bloom, Rosie King and Joe Stroud, who will all be previewing the forth coming Chadwick Garden Anthology of Poets. West of the West: Dreamers, Believers, Builders, and Killers in the Golden State (Public Affairs)

Thursday, May 7 at 7:30pm

A PORTRAIT OF MODERN CALIFORNIA
West of the West

California is the nation's richest and most confounding state. Arax's California is ominous and tragic, yet captivating and full of promise. Each region, by virtue of geography, psychology, and history gives rise to its own drama: an immigrant family from Oaxaca faces border crossings then the brutal raisin harvest; Lamont, the inspiration for the town featured in The Grapes of Wrath, has only one Okie left; and the local Humboldt bank sees a sizeable daily deposit of cash, most of which reeks of marijuana. Combining hard-hitting reporting and stellar writing, Arax (The King of California) captures both the atmosphere of social upheaval and the sense of being rooted in a community.

The Language of Bees
(Bantam)

Monday, May 11 at 7:30pm

Language of BeesLOCAL FEMME FATALES OF MYSTERY, LAURIE KING & MARY RUSSELL, RETURN!

For Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, returning to the Sussex coast after seven months abroad was especially sweet. There was even a mystery to solve: the unexplained disappearance of an entire colony of bees from one of Holmes's beloved hives. Yet, another, darker mystery emerges from Sherlock's own past and from his greatest failure. From suicides at Stonehenge to the secrets of a woman on the streets of Shanghai, Russell will find herself on the trail of a killer more dangerous than any she's ever faced--a killer Sherlock Holmes himself may be protecting for reasons near and dear to his heart.

Laurie King is a radiant and witty speaker, local celebrity, bestselling author of over 17 novels and one of only two novelists to win the Best First Crime Novel awards on both sides of the Atlantic. Check our Laurie's amazing reader contests & blog at her website www.laurierking.com.

Water Ghosts
FACT & FICTION MINGLE IN A REAL CALIFORNIA IMMIGRANT TOWN

Locke, CA, 1928. Three bedraggled Chinese women suddenly appear out of the mist one afternoon in a small Chinese farming town on the Sacramento River, and their arrival throws the community into confusion. Two of the women are unknown to the townspeople, while the third is the long-lost wife of Richard Fong, the handsome manager of the local gambling parlor, who had left her behind in China many years earlier. Shawna Yang Ryan's melodic first novel is a passionate, sophisticated intertwining of fact and fiction that examines mingling cultures, modern myths, and forgotten history. Water Ghosts beautifully chronicles separation and betrayal, loneliness and longing, and what happens when a Chinese ghost story begins to come true.

Either You're In or You're In the Way:  Two Brothers, Twelve Months, and One Filmmaking Hell-Ride to Keep a Promise to Their Father (HarperCollins)

Thursday, May 14 at 7:30pm

THE IMPOSSIBLE IS POSSIBLE
Either You're In Or You're In the Way
When the father of identical twin brothers Logan and Noah Miller died homeless and alone in a jail cell, they vowed, come hell or high water, that their film, Touching Home, would be made as a dedication to their love for him. Either You're in or You're in the Way is the hilarious, implausible and touching story of how--without a dime to their names nor a single meaningful contact in Hollywood--they managed to write, produce, direct, and act in a feature film alongside a cast and crew who have 11 Academy Awards and 26 nominations among them, including actors Ed Harris, Brad Dourif and Robert Forster. The film has won film festival awards from Calgary to Melbourne to San Francisco-yet it is the story of how the film came to be that truly captivates and inspires.

Tonight, watch clips from Touching Home and hear from the inspiring brothers themselves. When you buy a book, save your receipt! The receipt earns two adults entrance to the June 6 BOOKSTOCK event at SF AT&T Park: art, music, a screening of Touching Home-a huge party that benefits the Giants Community Fund. (Kids are free.)

Thursday, May 28 at 7:30pm

Eat My GlobeOBSESSED EATER STALKS MEALS THE WHOLE WORLD OVER

At 40, lifelong food-lover Simon Majumdar had an epiphany: a big wide world of food lay outside his hometown of London and he'd hardly eaten any of it. So he quit his desk job and used his entire life savings to fund a whirlwind quest fueled by hunger and wanderlust. Passionate, knowledgeable, and hilarious, Eat My Globe tours the cultures and dining experiences of thirty countries: from rotten shark meat of Iceland to Scotland's whiskey to Kansas City BBQ.

"The dangerously obsessive, staggeringly knowledgeable, provocative and opinionated Simon Majumdar knows his shit. No question about it...Many would kill to have eaten the meals in their lifetimes that Majumdar has consumed in a single year and he has an endearingly soft spot for the grimiest of lowlife pubs. Plus, the bastard can write." --Anthony Bourdain, author of Kitchen Confidential
WINE LECTURE & TASTING:
SILVER MOUNTAIN VINEYARDS

Sunday, May 31 at 3:00pm

Wine Lecture & Tasting Series:
one Sunday per month, we highlight a local winery in an event that gives them a venue through which to share their history, their unique wines, and their views on what makes our area a blissful spot for vineyards and for the crafting of wines. A chance for wine lovers & readers to come together for enjoyment and education.

Silver Mountain VineyardsHidden high in the Santa Cruz Mountains lies the unique winery and vineyard Silver Mountain, named so because founder/winemaker Jerold O'Brien is a firm believer that the mountain philosophy of independence and challenge is pivotal to producing strong character, both in people and in grapes. Silver Mountain is known for its Pinot Noir, its Chardonnay produced from its organically-farmed estate vineyard, and its Bordeaux blend Alloy. They are strong proponents of sustainability and use winegrapes from sustainable and organic vineyards. Handcrafted with a passion for quality, Silver Mountain's wines possess exquisite, complex flavors that are delicious now and also benefit from aging. Let Jerold himself tell his story while you taste his wines.

*A cheese & bread selection is included in the $8 participation fee. Please assure your spot by purchasing your ticket in advance. Note Time.
