 Valentine's Edition 2011

As we usher in the cold days of winter, we watch the forecast for school closings, warnings of icy roads, and the occasional flurry of snowflakes that melt away almost as quickly as they fall. These unexpected reprieves from daily routine are often a highlight. As winter melts away into spring, many school holidays show up on the calendar that are incidentally not always work holidays! Mom's Best Friend families need back up care for these dates so that the kids can still enjoy a fun day of crafts, activities, and approved outings.
Flu season is also upon us and many kids are getting sick and parents are relying upon Mom's Best Friend for their sick child since these situations are often not able to be predicted in advance. Please let us know if you would like to be on the list as a temporary caregiver to assist in situations like these, if you are not already. Temporary work is flexible and can be a great way to earn extra $! Valentine's Day is around the corner, and next month is Spring Break, so let us know if you are available to help out at these peak times when the demand will be high!

Featured Austin Long-term Nanny: Jessica W.
We are so lucky at MBF to have had Jessica as one of our nannies for the past 7 years! She is wonderful with all ages. Her sweet and calm personality yields itself well to the exceptional care she gives. Jessica has worked for the same family for over 5 years as their nanny manager. The kids are older and are so sad to see her go. The family states, "she has been instrumental in teaching [them] fundamental elements needed to prepare them for school." They have even expressed that Jessica "has always been there for us even in a moments notice." Jessica is a fantastic, warm and sweet nanny that would be an asset to any family!
Featured Austin Temporary Nanny: Diane J.
Diane is a delight to work with and is a wonderful addition to our temporary team in Austin. She has been a nanny with MBF for almost 3 years, but has over 25 years of childcare experience. Her favorite part of working as a temp nanny is meeting new families and finding creative activities to meet each child's needs. Diane always carries her bag of tricks, including crafts and puppets. She also works as a night nanny and loves "getting to snuggle and love on the newborn babies." When she is not nannying, Diane is spending time with her 9 children, the 3 youngest still living at home and her 2 granddaughters. |

Valentine Hat
This craft foam Valentine's Day hat wiggles when you move your head!
What you'll need: - Red pre-cut adhesive-backed craft foam hearts in small (2) and large (2) sizes
- Red chenille stems
- Wire cutters
- Pen
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun
- White poster board
- Ruler
- Stapler, tape, or glue (to fasten hat together)
- Pink pre-cut adhesive-backed craft foam hearts in small size (optional)
How to make it: - Cut a strip of poster board to fit around a child's head and about 2" wide.
- Determine where the sides of a child's head is by trying the band on. Mark with pen.
- Cut red chenille stems in half using the wire cutters.

Glue the stems on the outside of the poster board where marked. -
Glue a small heart over each of the chenille stems that are attached to the poster board. -
Glue a large red heart at the other end of each of the chenille stems. -
Let the children decorate using the remaining small craft foam hearts or any other decoration such as lace, stickers, markers, and crayons. -
Tape, glue, or staple the hat closed to fit the child. (Paper clips also work)
Tips:
- If you cannot find pre-cut foam hearts, buy regular sheets of craft foam and cut out hearts yourself.
- You can use a cookie cutter to obtain a heart shape. You can use tacky glue, but it will need to set up overnight before wearing.

Chocolate Candy Hearts
The kids will love the results of this easy recipe. All you need are a few items to make your own Valentine's chocolates. Give this candy heart craft away as a gift or
enjoy it for yourself!
What you'll need:
- Plastic heart-shaped candy mold
- Red, white and cocoa colored candy melts
- Sandwich bags (zipper, not pleated)
- Scissors
- Spoon
- Wax paper
- Plate
- Wooden skewer or clean craft paint brush
How to make it:- Put a handful of candy melts into an open zipper sandwich bag.
- Microwave candy in bag for 30-40 seconds or until melted.
- Cut one corner of the bag with scissors to squeeze melted candy through.
Caution: Bag may be hot, so use paper towel or a pot holder to handle it. - Gently squeeze chocolate out of bag and into the molds.
- Tap the side of the mold tray to knock out any air bubbles and flatten chocolate.
- Place in refrigerator until set.
- Pop out of molds and serve.
Tips:- Candy molds can be found at discount department and craft supply stores in the craft section near the cake decorating supplies. They look much like a muffin tin, though much smaller and made from clear plastic.
- You can use chocolate chips instead of candy melts and use food coloring to change or tint white chocolate.
- Be careful when dealing with melted chocolate as it can be very hot. Always supervise children closely when making anything in the kitchen.
