Time to clean those Teeth!
Welcome to National Dental Month!
Here's hoping you had a wonderful holiday season. Just like we humans our animals need their teeth cleaned. February is National Dental month and many vets offer a special cleaning discount for your pets.
According to the American Dental Association, almost 80% of us brush our teeth at least twice a day. But how many of us brush our pet's teeth that often? Ignoring your dog or cat's teeth can lead to the same problems humans face: tooth loss, pain, periodontal disease, and damage to the internal organs. In fact, oral disease is the most common health problem seen by veterinarians!
Pay close attention to the Vet Spotlight this month... there is a great article on dog dental disease as well as a link to feline dental disease.
Thanks for spending this time with us, it is you that makes us do what we do! NOW On to some amazing people, places and things!

RUCKUS RULZ! TM
Bulldog Tested, Labrador Approved!
Hi, it is me Ruckus and this month we are talking about my teeth.
A year or so ago my mom found PlaqueOff at a trade show. Of course she didn't think it would work anything like it did, but I am here to tell you that just a dab will do ya!
Each night Mom sprinkles just a little bit over my food and wala, pearly whites!
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't an over night fix, but it does help with tarter and plaque which lead to gum disease, which then lead to... well you get the picture.
But don't stop at just this one product, remember that brushing your pets teeth, bones and dental toys are all a part of our dental health.
You can find this product at many independant pet stores, or online.
Smell you soon, Love Ruckus
Don't forget that if you have a favorite person, place or thing that your pet can't live without you can email me at [email protected] and maybe I can check it out. Even as picky as a Bulldog is, you never know, it could be my favorite!

Preventive Health Care for your Pet!
Dental Disease in Dogs
I was unaware that dogs have dental problems. Is it common?
Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen by veterinarians. Over 68% of all dogs over the age of three are estimated to have some form of periodontal or dental disease.
"Few pets show obvious signs of dental disease."
Few pets show obvious signs of dental disease. It is up to the pet's family and veterinarian to uncover this hidden and often painful condition.
Are dental problems the same in pets and people?
No. In man, the most common problem is tooth decay, which, due to the loss of calcium from the enamel, results in painful, infected caries (also called cavities). In the dog, tooth decay represents less than 10% of all dental problems. The most common dental problems seen in dogs are caused by periodontal disease.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is a term used to describe inflammation or infection of the tissues surrounding the tooth. Accumulation of tartar and calculus on the teeth causes gum recession around the base of the tooth. Infection soon follows and the gums recede further, exposing sensitive unprotected tooth root surfaces and the bony tooth sockets Left untreated, the infection spreads deep into the tooth socket, destroying the bone. Ultimately, the tooth loosens and falls out.
Is periodontal disease very common?
It is estimated that more than two-thirds of dogs over three years of age suffer from some degree of periodontitis, making it by far the most common disease affecting our pet dogs.

News dogs can dig!
What a treat at the Brookfield Zoo in Illinois: 10 healthy pups of the African wild dog variety! These pups were born to Kim and Digger, and this is the largest litter ever born at the zoo.
Its a good thing too, because they are an endangered species. The veternarians and other staff at the zoo had the pups in for a check up recently to make sure these cuties can help reverse the tend.
Like us "non-wild" dogs, these little buggers get distemper vaccinations, booster shots. Apparently distemper is a big reason for their decline in the wild--so while shots are no fun, I am glad they are getting vaccinated so there can be more of my wild African cousins in the future. They even get
microchips just like me
L.A. Unleashed
has the whole story, along with more adorable pictures and even a video of one of the surprisingly cooperative pups at her checkup. |
