Break out the leash baby and lets take a walk!  Oh and don't forget the ball and frisbee and water dish and kool collar and and and...

Don't you just love it when the days are longer and the sun is visiting us more?   Believe me our 4-legged friends take notice of this too.  They know it means more time to 'go'!

Each spring the fundraising walks begin.  Every state has them and they are always for a good cause, be it for animals or humans.

Ruckus and I just took a little trip to Denver to participate in a cancer walk for a good friend of ours!  Ruckus didn't seem to mind that this was for a 2-legged person, Zachs walk... Walk for the Care... he was just so excited to get out and get some much needed air.  The fund-raising part is just a bonus to him!

Then there was the Doggie Dash and the Hike the Dike... this coming weekend is the Pug Crawl... the possibilities are endless, and that is just here in Portland!

Do us a favor, and take a walk for a cause... it does a body good!

City/Town: Portland
Website or Map: http://www.oregonhumane.org/p...

pugs (and other dogs) free; kids 10 and under free.

A Portland tradition continues on Sunday, May 23rd when a parade of costumed pugs take to the street for the 10th Annual Pug Crawl. This year's theme: "Pug-a-licious" .

The popular Portland event raises funds for the Oregon Humane Society and gives hundreds of pugs (and their owners) a chance to enjoy food, microbrews and live music (from the The Shwing Daddies) while watching the annual Parade of Pugs outside of MacTarnahan's Taproom in Northwest Portland.

This year's Pug Parade Grand Marshall is Anita Kisse, news reporter for KATU (2). Anita is huge fan of pugs, and her dog Sigmund won the prize for best costume in 2007. The parade is open to all costumed pugs, with special prizes for the winner.

The Pug Crawl begins at 1 pm. Registration for the parade begins at 2 pm, with the parade scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.

The taproom, part of Portland's oldest microbrewery, will offer beer and classic brew house cuisine for the crowd. There will also be a pug kissing booth, retail booths selling pug-friendly goodies, and OHS volunteers with dogs available for adoption.

A $10 admission donation is suggested, with 100% of donations going to help animals at OHS. The Pug Crawl depends on volunteer staffing and the generosity of MacTarnahan's Tap Room.

Bark Boutique

Hey all, Sir Ruckus here!  I know that generally I brag about products you can eat or play with, but I have to dedicate this months column to lookin' good!  After all, Spring is in the air!

What can I say, my mom is obsessed with collars and is always on the look out for something to make me look HOT!  She must do pretty good because lots of people stop me to check out the latest and greatest neckwear I am sporting.

My, ok my moms new find is a little company right down the road from where we live.  My good friends Murphy and Bailey have taught their mom Kristine just how to make a dog look its best, and I have to tell you they have done a mighty fine job!

When I asked Kristine why she started this company she told me that in  2007, she found herself spending a fortune spoiling the above mentioned Labradors, Murphy and Bailey. Murphy, in particular seemed to destroy collars often with his exuberance (translation: he slobbers a lot and his collars take a daily beating at the park!). So she decided  to combine her three passions - the dogs, baking, and sewing - to create durable and fun collars to match their personalities, as well as treats she knew were healthy and safe for her dogs.   Ok, you caught me, there is food involved and the treats are magnificent!

It doesn't matter if you have a toy dog or a giganto dog, she has a collar for you.  You say your dog is hard to fit... well she can do custom work too if you tell her Ruckus sent you!

Mom likes these collars so much that each new rescue dog that comes to our house gets a fresh new collar and leash set all from Bark Boutique.

SO, what are you waiting for?  Go to the website and check out these amazing collars for yourself! Oh ya, and don't forget the treats.  Yummie!

Smell you soon,
Love Ruckus

Don't forget that if you have a favorite person, place or thing that your pet can't live without you can email me at [email protected] and maybe I can check it out. Even as picky as a Bulldog is, you never know, it could be my favorite!

Listen up! Dogs are good listeners

Listening dog
Just eight percent of all pet owners say they talk to their pets about their personal problems.  That seems low--It is a shame more don't know that we understand and like to listen. Sometimes us dogs just *know* when someone needs a pick me up.  FidoAndWino.com has a heartwarming story about how a dogs' wiggle can cheer up someone who really needs it--even if they don't really know that person.

According to a
recent poll by Petside.com and the Associated Press, a third of married women who have pets say that their pets are better listeners than their husbands. Some men still chat it up with their dogs.  According to Ron Farber, it's easier to talk to his dog Buddy than his wife because "the dog doesn't have an opinion."

He is onto something according to Karen Sueda, one of the just 50 certified veterinary animal behaviorists in the country.  She told the Associated Press,
"Pets are great because they provide us with unconditional support. They never talk back, never give us the wrong opinion and they are always there for us," she said. "As much as we love our spouses or significant others, sometimes they are not there, sometimes they have their own thoughts about how we should deal with situations. And sometimes, especially when it's a husband or male significant other, they want to solve the problem rather than just listening to the problem."  Seems like the other 92 percent of pet owners need to get on board and start talking with their dogs!

A very old and cranky dog belonging to a loving family was in his last stages of life.  I was called to ask him if he wanted help crossing over.... He was positive in his response he wanted nothing to do with a trip to the vet.  This family was in agony as his breathing became labored and he was unable to use his back legs.  So they all took turns nursing and caring for his every need throughout the night.   And as all good dogs go to heaven he went in his time and in his way.  When he took his last breath the family was there holding paws and stroking his head... he died peacefully at 4:00 a.m..  This beloved family member was determined, hard headed and constantly growling at life.  It only seemed fitting that he pass on his own terms.  The opportunity this provided him and his family was immense in that it allowed them the time to process his passing and gave him the dignity of how he wanted to go.  I highly recommend that pet owners consider contacting me if you are unsure of your pet's wishes in such a critical time.  Sometimes we are just too close to understand what they really want.

Preventive Health Care for your Pet!

  Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Arthritis

Since the 1930's, Omega-3 fatty acids have beenknown to be essential components of the diet of humans and many animals. An essential fatty acid is a fatty acid that is required for normal growth or health maintenance. The main types of essential fatty acids are Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids; the number refers to the chemical structure.

Earlier research concentrated on the role of Omega-6 fatty acids, but in recent decades, scientists turned their attention to the role of Omega-3 fatty acids in health. Scientific research has shown that Omega-3 fatty acids have a general anti-inflammatory effect in the body. They also support the normal growth and development of brain, eye and nerve tissue, support immune function, and may reduce the risk of certain types of cardiovascular disease.

FishThe main Omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to the diet are α-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fish oil, especially that from salmon or other fatty fish, is a rich source of both EPA and DHA. Other good sources include green-lipped mussels, certain types of algae, and flax oil.

Recent studies published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association showed that dogs with osteoarthritis benefit from eating foods containing high concentrations of Omega-3 fatty acids. According to the published results, dogs that ate these foods experienced less pain and had better mobility.

According to contributing author Kevin Hahn: "These studies demonstrate that feeding a food containing high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids to a dog with osteoarthritis significantly improves mobility and quality of life." The studies included 274 dogs with osteoarthritis. The focus of the research was on the effects of Omega-3 fatty acids on: the clinical signs of osteoarthritis; the weight-bearing ability of dogs with the disease; and the dose of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs required by dogs with osteoarthritis.
