Two full days of hoodoo fun, friendship, and learning, complete with potluck meals and plenty of time to meet your fellow conjure workers, sponsored by Missionary Independent Spiritual Church, and featuring teachers from around the country! The May Hoodoo Workshops are a casual, relaxing, and sociable way to gain hands-on practice in the spiritual arts.

10:00 AM - Palo Road-Opening and Blessing Ceremony
Dr. Kioni will perform an outdoor Palo Road-Opening and Blessing Ceremony in the Congo-Cuban African diasporic tradition for the empowerment, protection, and benefit of all attendees. This invocation will open the Workshop Weekend and bring strength, energy, and spiritual focus to all who attend.
Cost: FREE! - This is an outdoor ceremony, weather permitting
11:30 AM - Hoodoo Foods and Conjure Cook-Off
Robin Petersen will present her annual Hoodoo Foods! workshop on
Conjure Cookery. Magical Chefs have submitted recipes for publication in this year's Recipe Round-Up booklet, and those attending the workshop are bringing their sorcerous dishes in for sharing and taste testing. Prizes will be awarded to the top three conjure cooks.

1:00 PM - Making a Consecrated Palo Protection Amulet
Dr. Kioni will lead an intensive workshop in Making a Consecrated Palo Protection Amulet in a seashell for you to take home and bury at your doorstep. Container spells are found in all of the African diasporic religious and magical paths, including hoodoo, conjure, rootwork, obeah, Palo Monte, Voodoo, Santeria, and Lukumi. This Palo amulet, called a macuto, is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of all.

Miss cat is going back to the basics with a workshop titled All About Candles, a hands-on intensive on how to choose, load, carve, anoint, seal, and pray over free-standing, figural, and vigil candles for love, money, protection, luck, reversing, and cursing - and how to "read" the results in the wax, soot, and glass remains of your magical candles. Be prepared to learn a LOT -- this is a compressed version of the 5-hour class cat teaches to student graduates, but geared for newbies as well. Learn the secrets of The Philosophy of Fire!

Dr. E. will lead a hands-on workshop in Making and Catching a Spirit in a Doll-Baby for ritual use. This class covers everything from the historical perspective to hands-on work with dolls made from twigs, cloth, wax, clay, and other materials. Bring personal concerns of someone you wish to embody in your doll -- and be prepared to baptize your doll in the name of that someone special. This 1 1/2 hour workshop leads directly into the workshop on mirror boxes...

12:30 PM - Making and Working With Mirror Boxes
Robin Petersen will conduct a hands-on class on Making and Working With Mirror Boxes to trap spirits -- such as the one who was put in the doll-baby you just made in Dr. E.'s workshop! Your custom mirror box will be prepared in a ritual manner and the doll will be interred in it, so that all deeds, both good and evil, will reflect back to the one embodied in the doll. All materials are supplied and Robin guarantees that even craft-newbies will make and take home a beautiful hand-made wooden decoupaged mirror box.

3:30 PM Wordwide Traditions of Bone Reading
FINAL UPDATE: Due to a family emergency, Mvanah Maloti, who was to teach this workshop, cannot attend. His student, friend, and our dear colleague D. John Michael Hilford has taken his place and will lead a two-hour intensive workshop in Shamanic Traditions of Bone Reading from Around the World (also known as Throwing the Bones or Casting the Bones). Methods covered will include Sangoma Bone Reading, Peruvian Shamanic Bone Reading, Mongolian Shaggai Bone Reading, and Down Home Southern Style Bone Reading. Dr. Hilford has studied with teachers in many places, and brings all forms of bone reading together into a true shamanic teaching. This is a rare opportunity to learn bone-reading, and it is one workshop you must not miss.
