Growing up: House Training for Dummies
Believe it or not, house training is one of the easiest things to teach a dog because dogs are clean by nature and don't like to soil their den area. Using this concept, begin by always supervising your puppy when he/she is not in her den-crate environment. The largest reason people fail with house training is that they give the puppy more freedom than the pup or dog is capable of handling. An un-supervised pup or dog is bound to make mistakes.

Foundational Skills Video: The Place Command

Sit Means Sit dog trainer Bobby Pablico from Las Vegas, shows us progressions for training the place command. Place two raised objects (place boards) on the floor spread a few feet apart. We use a raised place board because this is clearly defined from the floor and becomes a tool to help the dog begin to problem solve. Most dogs will try to walk around or avoid the place boards when presented to it. Your goal will be to walk the dog over these two place boards. You begin by having the first place board between you and the dog and calling the dog to you, bringing them over the place board. You may need to guide them over this since the place board can present a clear boundary for them and they may hesitate initially to even touch it. Success at this level begins with getting the paws on the place board. Once the dog is moving freely over the first place board guide him over the second place board. By having two place boards, you are providing a natural target that builds attention to the task at hand, that will eventually bring attention to you. Once you have achieved this, you then become the director of the dogs energy, which is what we will share with you in our next article and video.

Treats: Homemade Dog Biscuits

2 teaspoons dry yeast
½ cup lukewarm water
2 tablespoons dry parsley
2 tablespoons minced garlic
1 ½ cups chicken broth
3 tablespoons honey
1 egg
5-6 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Dissolve yeast in warm water.  Stir in parsley, garlic, broth, honey, and egg.  Gradually blend in flour adding only enough to form a stiff dough.  Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth (3-5 minutes).  Shape into a ball and roll to ¼ inch thick.  Using bone-shaped cookie cutter, cut out biscuits.  Bake for 30 minutes, then turn over and bake for an additional 15 minutes.  Let cool overnight.  (You could turn off oven after they are finished baking and put biscuits back in oven overnight to make them crispier and crunchier).

How to:  Learn How We Use The Sit Means Sit Tug Toy

Contrary to popular belief, the true fun in a toy, comes from a skilled owner. Dog toys are purchased throughout the nation daily only to be found left without so much as a scratch on them. We decided to design our own line of world class tugs and not only teach clients how to have an obedient dog, but have a balance of fun and healthy structure in the relationship. These are the same tugs used during our Animal Planet TV segment. Here you will find a short instructional video clip and article, showcasing a variety of ways to play with your dog utilizing our tug toys .Please click here for video and article:

Trainer's Quick Tip: Setting A Goal
The importance of setting a clearly defined goal when teaching your dog is invaluable. If your goal is vague then no measure of time spent will define success, so be specific and pick a challenge that is age and skill appropriate. Remember we are responsible for the level of success our dogs achieve. Make sure to set your dog up for success at every learning phase. Click here to find your trainer nearest you.

Sit Means Sit International CEO Fred Hassen and Trainer Carla Collins Dallas TX
"I cannot thank Fred and Carla enough for the hope they have given me, my boyfriend and one of our dogs, Jabber! Jabber had been kicked out of five other training classes for being a fear biter and had multiple "professional" dog people tell me to euthanize him. I run a small animal rescue organization and 3 of our rescues were at this event as well. All of the handlers were incredibly impressed by the turn around of each of the dogs. One was so impressed that she may be attending your school to become a trainer!"
