2009 FTA Student Gathering
|
|
April 22-24, 2009
Eighty-four students from across Alaska attended the Student Gathering this year, held in Fairbanks, Alaska! To date, this was the largest gathering of students, in Alaska, who all share a common interest in becoming educators! The three-day event was full of fun and educational activities including a welcoming by the interior Athabascan community, guidance from elders, a panel discussion by Alaska Native educators, introduction to Learning Styles at Effie Kokrine Charter School, University of Alaska Fairbanks campus tours, an ice-cream social, club presentations and other fun activities! This is the one time each year that students who participate in school clubs throughout the year, can come together and share and interact with other students and Alaska Native educators. It was truly a celebration of "growing our own" educators. Other updates and photos will soon be featured on our website. Please contact Sonta for more information. Students who participated should submit a Media Release form.

Plans and Goals
As this school year comes to an end, we are looking forward to next year, 2009-2010! In early July, we will know whether or not we will receive funding from the Alaska Native Education Program for the next 3 years. With a new grant comes opportunity for growth. Plans and goals for next year include the following: - Future Educators of Alaska Our new name will open doors for students to explore other career opportunities in the field of education.
- Statewide Outreach: 3 districts/region More students, more cultural diversity and more partnerships are key to sustaining this program.
- Regional Student Gatherings For each region of Alaska, we will hold a Regional Student Gathering. This will allow more student participation at the local and regional levels. Our Statewide Student Gatherings will be held in the spring.
- Integrate into Workforce Development System Students who participate in FEA next year will have the opportunity to be involved in the State Workforce Development System Career Ready initiative and other career guidance programs.
From successes and challenges identified from 2003-2009, we will have a stronger and more solid program across Alaska. These goals will further extend our support to our K-12 students who want to become educators. If you have any questions, thoughts or suggestions for next year, please email or call our office.
