We are in the midst of a very successful Feria season.  Over the past two months we have hosted Ferias in four markets.  La Feria de la Familia offers our clients an innovative and effective way to reach thousands of consumers with one event and provides valuable resources and opportunities to our audiences, not to mention fantastic entertainment.  We are continuing to develop the creative offerings within the event and have increased attendance across all markets thanks to the hard work and dedication of our local teams.  We are really looking forward to the inaugural Feria in Philadelphia on the 23rd of this month and Washington, DC's event in December.

I also wanted to give you an update on the progress with the HD build outs in El Paso and Washington, DC.  As you know we are launching a fully HD local newscast at 5 and 10 pm in El Paso on November 16.  Washington DC's HD newscast will be fully operational and on the air starting November 6.  We are really excited about the new studios.  Below are photos of the state-of-the-art infrastructure.

WWDT Ft. Myers-Naples Supports Back to School

WWDT Ft. Myers-Naples supported the 11th Annual Back to School Festival at the Harborside Event Center in downtown Fort Myers on August 1.  The first 2,000 children received a backpack filled with school supplies. Many students also received free bicycle helmets, eye exams, haircuts and fingerprinting.   WWDT is proud to support such an important event that sets the tone for a successful school year.

WWSI Philadelphia Sends Winners to Miss Universe

WWSI Philadelphia and the Pennsy Flea Market gave visitors and customers the opportunity to enter for their chance to win a trip to Las Vegas to see the Miss Universe competition live.  The lucky winners, Marco and Leonilas Rivera, won round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, and VIP tickets to the Miss Universe live broadcast.

WZDC Washington, DC Introduces New Anchor

In August, WZDC Washington, DC introduced Nitza Soledad Pérez as the new face of Telenoticias Washington.  Soledad Pérez is the anchor for the 6 and 11 pm editions of the local news and comes to WZDC with a wealth of knowledge and experience from Telesur, where she worked as a correspondent for the past three years.  Prior to that, she worked with ABC News on World News Tonight.

KNSO Fresno Takes Part in Chamber Event

KNSO Fresno took part in the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Business Expo on August 6. It was a great opportunity to present Telemundo's programming, introduce holaciudad.com, and explore opportunities with business owners.  Over 500 business leaders attended the event.

First Annual Latin Splash a Great Success in Orlando

Thousands of Hispanics celebrated the first annual Latin Splash at Wet 'N Wild on September 25.  With Latin food and music, Rumba 100.3FM and WTMO Orlando kicked-off the festivities with Gaby Calderon from Entre Nos and Daniela Sanchez from Telenoticias Orlando.  Visitors participated in a variety of contests, including the limbo, relay races, and raffles for WTMO prizes.

WZDC Washington, DC Sponsors Fiesta Musical at the National Zoo

Each year, the Friends of the National Zoo organize Fiesta Musical, a festival to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.  As in years past, WZDC Washington, DC was a media sponsor for the event which included animal demonstrations, Latino music and dance, traditional crafts and Latin American foods.  WZDC promoted the event on-air, through its community calendar and with information on holaciudad.com.

Brenda Mulero was promoted to Station Manager of WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield.  She previously served as the Traffic and Business Manager for the television station where she has worked for almost 15 years.
Deborah Robinson  was promoted to Senior Traffic and Business Manager of ZGS.  For the past year, she served as the Traffic and Business Manager of WZDC Washington, DC where she joined the team with a wealth of experience in television broadcasting. 
Rudy Rodríguez was promoted to Local Sales Manager for WRIW Providence.  He previously served as an Account Executive for WNEU Boston and WRIW Providence.
Giovanna Salazar was promoted to Station Manager of VIVA 900 AM.  Giovanna has been with ZGS for over 5 years serving as the Senior Traffic and Business Manager.
Nicole Quiroga, General Manager of WZDC Washington, DC and WZTD Richmond, was honored as one of DC's 40 under 40 which recognizes the Washington area's top business leaders and owners under 40 years of age. The finalists will be profiled in a special supplement of the Washington Business Journal.

WTMO Orlando's 6th annual La Feria de la Familia welcomed over 20,000 event attendees and more than 100 sponsors and community groups showcasing their services and products.   Patrons lined-up early to take advantage of the free back-to-school immunizations and health screenings including diabetes, cholesterol, and HIV testing.  Telemundo celebrities Dra. Ana María Polo from Caso Cerrado and Persiguiendo Injusticias, and event emcee Raymond Arrieta from the morning show Levántate signed autographs alongside the Telenoticias Orlando news team.  Fans enjoyed appearances by Jason Canela, star of Telemundo's recent hit novela ¿Dondé está Elisa?  and reigning super bantamweight boxing champion Wilfredo Vázquez, Jr.  The evening culminated with the legendary singer Andy Montañez and his orchestra playing their hits from the last 30 years.

KTDO El Paso was host to over 9,000 people and 100 businesses and organizations at their 4th annual event.  El Paso's La Feria featured a variety of local and national entertainment led by Telemundo stars Dra. Ana María Polo, Melvin Cabrera of ¿Dondé está Elisa?, and Penélope Menchaca from the popular dating show 12 Corazones who also emceed the event.  For the second year in a row, El Paso native and musical legend Vikki Carr made a special appearance and Stephanie Rivas was crowned Miss La Feria. An important highlight of KTDO's event is the dissemination of healthcare information. Event attendees received valuable insight about healthy cooking, and health and fitness training, as well as medical screenings, glucose testing and eye exams.

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield September 26 - CT Expo Center

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield's La Feria experienced record attendance this year with over 15,000 people.  The event was emceed by Raymond Arrieta, Telemundo celebrity and well-known Puerto Rican comedian.  Dra. Ana María Polo signed autographs and took photos with adoring fans. The musical performances included bachata sensation 24 Horas, reggaeton chart-toppers Dyland & Lenny and local artist El Cacique de Puerto Rico. Attendees had the opportunity to win great prizes from sponsors and learned about the many resources and services offered in the community.  For the first time the event included a Miss Feria de la Familia pageant.  The final candidates were selected through voting on the local Spanish-language web portal holaciudad.com and on the day of the event Juliannie Diaz Rivera was crowned Miss Feria 2010.

Tampa's 6th annual La Feria de la Familia experienced tremendous growth with over 16,000 participants.  The event was organized by WRMD Tampa, holaciudad.com and ESPN Deportes 1550AM.  Telemundo actors Catherine Siachoque from ¿Dondé está Elisa? and David Chocarro from Alguien te Mira interacted with fans. Internationally renowned recording artist Tito Nieves performed his timeless classics and headlined the event.   Attendees also enjoyed a full day of information and resources ranging from insurance coverage, mortgage advice, legal consultations and nutritional guidance. The event included a special appearance by Florida's Governor Charlie Crist who greeted the public. The popular Chicas ESPN Deportes 1550AM were present signing their 2011 calendars while local radio program Momento Deportivo ESPN 1550AM broadcasted live. Families especially enjoyed the Kids Area what featured plenty of fun and educational activities such as science experiments, face painting and dance performances.

Each year WZDC Washington, DC and NBC 4 celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by holding an essay contest for local high school students that encourages them to reflect on the unique Hispanic-American experience while emphasizing the importance of an education for all Americans.  Drawing upon the theme Why is Hispanic Heritage Month Important? students submit an original essay, which is judged by a panel of journalists, as well as community and business leaders for content and originality. The judges selected ten finalists who were honored at an evening reception at the NBC 4 Studios.  This year's winner was Barbara Leary, a senior at Washington, DC's School Without Walls.  Her essay will be published in the weekly Spanish newspaper, El Tiempo Latino.

WWSI Philadelphia, holaciudad.com and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corporation (GPTMC) partnered for another successful campaign.  Philly Homegrown™ as Philly: Nuestra Cosecha informs residents and visitors about the region's bountiful local food scene and identifies foods that are healthy, delicious and support the local economy.  Philly Homegrown™, accompanied by the tagline Real Local Flavor, or Philly:  Nuestra Cosecha-Ciudad de Verdad, Comida Verdadera, promotes the people, places and flavors of the area's 100-mile foodshed from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties to Amish Country to the Atlantic Ocean.  The campaign includes a microsite on holaciudad.com which in addition to providing information on where to buy and eat locally grown foods, it features, photos, local foods, chefs, recipes and recipe contests.  WWSI Philadelphia also produced a series of vignettes with information about locally grown food and using local ingredients in traditional Hispanic recipes.

holaciudad.com and All Star Boxing, Inc. teamed up to present a boxing championship title fight live from the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, FL on October 16. The pay-per-view main event featured current WBO super-bantamweight champion, Wilfredo Vázquez Jr.'s title defense versus Iván Hernández. The broadcast was available in the United States and Puerto Rico with open broadcasting in Latin America, Asia and Europe. holaciudad.com visitors in Orlando and Tampa also had the unique opportunity to win a VIP prize package that included ring-side seats, a meet and greet with Vázquez Jr. and autographed boxing gloves.

In October VIVA 900AM debuted an innovative news program that airs Saturday mornings at 10.  Las Otras Noticias (The Other News) is a program that presents important news headlines from the English-language print press to Spanish speakers.  The producer and voice behind Las Otras Noticias is journalist Julio Aliaga who translates and reads articles to the radio audience from respected newspapers such as The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and magazines such as Newsweek and Time.  His more than 25 years of experience makes this program one-of-a-kind in the Washington, DC Hispanic market and gives VIVA listeners access to additional news and information.

WNEU Boston and holaciudad.com partnered with The Group, and Bauza & Associates to host a Latino Breakfast Seminar on October 7 at the University of Massachusetts Club.  The seminar provided a detailed overview of the New England Hispanic market, and featured keynote speakers with extensive experience. WNEU's Mike Gillespie presented Telemundo's new season line-up as well as the web portal holaciudad.com. Rudy Bozas, Principal Senior Director of Account Services at The Group discussed how to target Latinos and Hector Bauzá, President/ CEO at Bauzá and Associates explained best marketing tactics to better reach the Latino community.  The seminar had great attendance with over 50 guests which included agencies, clients, potential clients, media partners, and community organizations.

KVDA San Antonio Slams and Jams with the Spurs

KVDA San Antonio took part in the 1st annual Slam and Jam event at the Sonny Melendrez Community Center on August 14.  The event is presented by the city of San Antonio, the San Antonio Spurs and the San Antonio Youth Summit.  Slam and Jam serves over one thousand at-risk and disadvantaged students from the city's West Side.  The event is co-hosted by George Hill of the Spurs and Sonny Melendrez, and included a Future Fair, a 3 on 3 basketball competition with Spurs' coaches and staff, food booths, parent presentations, and much more. Through on-air promotion and on-site participation, KVDA was a part of this great city-wide initiative.

received firsthand advice for their legal careers from Telemundo's Dra. Ana María Polo, prominent attorney, judge, and host of Caso Cerrado at WTMO Orlando's La Feria de la Familia.  "We need more good lawyers," stressed Dra. Polo to the eager group of law students.  "There are many people out there who will tell you that lawyers are no good, but don't listen to them," she said emphatically. "It is part of your responsibility as students of the law to continue adding to the group of good lawyers."  The HALSA members spent the day at Feria as volunteers.  Dra. Polo presented the students with mini Caso Cerrado gavels and encouraged them to "fight the good fight".  "After all," she concluded with a smile, "someone is going to have to take over for me when I'm gone."

In celebration of the Miss Universe competition that aired on Telemundo, WZDC Washington, DC and KTDO El Paso ran a promotion to make a local viewer Reina por un Día (Queen for a Day).  Viewers logged-on to holaciudad.com to enter for their chance to receive prizes including spa packages and gift certificates.  The winners were Connie Tobar, of Annandale, Virginia, and Berenice Acosta of El Paso.  WZDC partnered with Hair Cuttery for the promotion and in El Paso,  Acosta, a loyal viewer, appeared on a special winner commercial spot that aired during the Miss Universe telecast.

WRIW Providence Participates in Central American Festivals

WRIW Providence participated in the Guatemalan Festival on September 18 at the Roger Williams Park.  Over 3,000 people attended the event which is organized by the Guatemalan Center of New England, a non-profit organization that encourages, promotes, and disseminates Guatemalan culture in New England. The following weekend WRIW partnered with the Guatemalan American Association of Rhode Island (GARRI) for another festival celebrating Central American communities.  GARRI is a non-profit organization that empowers the community providing a variety of different resources.

WAMA 1550AM Launches Morning Show El Mañanero Deportivo

WAMA ESPN Deportes 1550AM recently launched its new morning show El Mañanero Deportivo hosted by Alberto de la Torre, Mauricio Verú and Ricco Argüello.  The show airs from 8 -9 am Monday through Friday and features a variety of sports ranging from amateur to professional to international sporting events.

WNEU Boston and holaciudad.com sponsored the Boston Music Conference (BMC), an event that promotes Boston within the music industry and offers the city's aspiring talent a chance to meet some of the industry's top executives and celebrities. This year's conference was held on September 25 and 26 at Mojitos Lounge and included workshops, various networking and educational opportunities and exclusive events.  The conference provides the region's youth with the information and tools necessary to pursue a career in music.  The BMC is the largest and most comprehensive conference of its kind on the East Coast.

Members of the WTMO Orlando team were invited to host a special Lunch & Learn event at Universal Orlando on September 22, highlighting the shared vision of their network parent company, NBC Universal, and emphasizing the local Telemundo Orlando brand perspective.  Telenoticias Orlando news anchor, Olga Aymat, opened the presentation with a video about the Hispanic demographic in Central Florida and WTMO's commitment to providing the highest quality newscasts in Spanish.  To stress the demographic's growth and purchasing power, Account Executive, Mattie Santana, added impactful facts and figures to demonstrate the value of our audience.  In closing, Promotions and Marketing Director, Christina Hernandez, shared the station's efforts in the community, showcasing ZGS branded events La Feria de la Familia, La Buena Vida, and Leer Para Vencer.  Guests at the Lunch & Learn's packed session included members of Universal Orlando's Unidos Team, a team developed by the human resources department dedicated to the development and growth of Hispanic outreach and awareness.

WWSI Philadelphia Celebrates Hispanic Fiesta
 
The two-day celebration of Hispanic culture brought together over 6,000 Latinos from the Delaware Valley to an event filled with games, food, music and information. Hispanic Fiesta at Penn's Landing organized by Concilio, one of Philadelphia's oldest Latino non-profit organizations, is one of the premiere Hispanic events of the summer season.  The rain was no match for the community who made WWSI's booth their favorite as they lined-up to play games, win prizes and sing along to the popular Caso Cerrado theme song.  The next day, when the sun made its appearance - the waterfront setting in historic Penn's Landing was perfect for those who had been long awaiting the opportunity to dance to the rhythms of merengue, bachata, salsa and of course reggaeton. On stage the WWSI team greeted the crowd and invited everyone to their inaugural La Feria de la Familia.

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield Showcases Triunfadores
 
WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield celebrated Hispanic Heritage month by showcasing the accomplishments of local Triunfadores, area Hispanics who are making a difference in the community.  WRDM/WDMR produced a series of on-air vignettes highlighting leaders that have contributed to the progress and success of the Hispanic community.  The vignettes were designed to provide positive role models for young people and encourage them to become the next generation of leaders.  holaciudad.com also had a special section dedicated to profiling the honorees which included both community and business leaders.

WZTD Richmond Participates in ¿Qué Pasa? Festival

WZTD Richmond kicked-off Hispanic Heritage month with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at the 10th annual ¿Qué Pasa?  Festival on September 25 at the Science Museum of Virginia.  More than 15,000 people gathered for the free festival which combines the irresistible rhythm of music, the zest of culture, and exquisite food from all over Latin America.  This year's event featured Passport to Education, an educational symposium to bring resources to Hispanic youth.  Present at the WZTD Richmond booth was Sarodj Bertin Miss Haiti Universe 2010.
