A note to Visitors:

It's the Busy Season - Take the Bus.

Visitors can park in the parking lots of the old visitor center on Taneytown Road (Rte 134). A Gold Line service will take you to the Visitor Center and back. There is a bus every 15-20 minutes. It also stops at the old cyclorama parking lot, parking lot 3, parking lot 2 (where you disembark) and then round to the old visitor center again. The service begins at 7:15 am and the last pickup at the Visitor Center will be 6:30 pm. The Gold Line operates Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May through December.

Sacred Trust Weekend - June 29 through July 1, 2012

Sacred Trust is the Gettysburg Foundation's annual talk and book signing event. In three packed days visitors explored a broad range of Civil War topics featuring renowned speakers and authors such as: Ted Alexander, Chief Historian at Antietam, on the importance of that battle; D. Scott Hartwig, GNMP Supervisory Historian, on the Maryland campaign; Carol Reardon, Penn State U, on military strategist Emil Schalk; Garry Adelman, of the Center for Civil War Photography, on Gettysburg's photographic mysteries; Dennis Frye, Chief Historian at the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, on Lincoln's Union in peril, and many more. It was, of course, the perfect opportunity to buy some new books.

Education 150 is underway

From July 15-19 the Richard Bartol Jr. Educators' Conference will help a select group of 50 teachers address the challenges they face in the classroom in connecting their diverse student groups to the important history and social implications of the Civil War.

The conference has been crafted to give teachers a full and customized experience while following the National Council for Social Studies, Common Core and State Curriculum Standards. Each day an inspiring keynote speaker will address the theme of that day, such as "People and Events of the Civil War Era," "Linking the Civil War to Language Arts" and "Linking Literature with Life." The keynote message will be followed by break-out sessions and field trips that expand on the practical relevance of the day's theme and will provide ways to connect students to the Civil War using each educator's local setting and resources.

The project will continue with a program to bring the top students to Gettysburg in 2013 for a special leadership program, drawing again on the rich history embedded in this hallowed ground.

Events

Volunteer Service Days

For these service days, volunteers in small groups work on the battlefield. Projects tend to be battlefield care such as brush-clearing (a never-ending task!) and trail maintenance. July and August dates are:

 July 13 and 14.

August 10 and 11

An Evening with the Cyclorama

Every Saturday evening at 6:00 there will be a presentation that brings you up close to the painting - to learn its history and see how the illusion is created from behind the scenes. Two presentations in July and August will be by Sue Boardman, Licensed Battlefield Guide and an expert on the painting:

July 27 (the one exception) is a Friday.

August 11

Another program, "What in the World is a Cyclorama," is available on the other Saturdays at the same time.

The programs last about two hours and are limited to 50 attendees. Single adult ticket price is $20 and youth ticket (age 6 to 12) is $10. The program begins in the Ford Motor Company Fund Education Center. To reserve tickets by telephone, call the Reservations Department at 877-874-2478. Tickets can also be purchased in advance at the ticket counter in the lobby of the Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Visitor Center.

Caroline's Tea

The first Caroline's Tea took place Saturday, June 23, under a marquee in the side yard at Rupp House. Caroline Rupp welcomed 50 attendees and, with her friend Mrs. Shriver, gave a short presentation. The ladies of Gettysburg made guests feel very welcome - including some of Caroline's descendants who were amazed to see her looking so young after 149 years. In spite of the heat guests did justice to the delicious treats. The most popular tea, however, was iced.

The next Tea will take place Saturday, July 21, under the marquee at Rupp House, 451 Baltimore St., 11:30 to 1:00 pm. Participants will meet the Angel of the (especially Antietam) Battlefield, Clara Barton. Tickets may be obtained at the Visitor Center
