Wow! What a Volunteer Work Day!
On Saturday, June 2, 275 volunteers from 18 different states assembled for work at around 8 in the morning. We worked until 3 (with time off for lunch).
Maybe the fact that it was a perfect day, or lunch was good, or the camarader ie just drove us on but in that time we:
Painted - the Brian barn and house; the Lydia Leister barn and house; the Cobean barn; the Millerstown Rd. Fence (Eisenhower Site); the Sherfy Hog fence.
Built - a half mile of Virginia Worm fence and a quarter mile of Post and Rail along Chambersburg Pike; completed the 7th rail on fences begun in 2011 but not completed because we ran out of rails (a crew of 20 volunteers was assigned to this!).
Cleaned - Non-Civil War headstones and painted inscriptions on Civil War headstones in the National Cemetery.
Cleared Brush - at the Triangular Field at Devil's Den; and the George Spangler Farm.
Overall we contributed about 6.5 hours each for a total of 1787.5 volunteer hours. And we all had a wonderful day! |
More Smart Parking Initiatives
It really makes a difference, after you have enjoyed the museum, the Cyclorama, maybe a little shopping - to be able to find your car. Sometimes that can be a challenge, as anyone who has dealt with the acres of parking around large shopping malls will agree.
The Visitors Center has added a simple but very helpful improvement: color coded parking lot signs.
The parking lots will continue to be numbered as before - as Lots #1, #2, #3 and Bus Lot; and the bays or sections will be A, B, C and so forth. Now however there will be a color associated with each lot.
We believe that it is easier to remember the color than the number. And once you are in the correct lot, you will be able to find your car, throw in all the great things you bought at the Bookstore, and head for home.
We hope you had a great visit! |
