Smart Parking and Transit

Before many months have gone by, visitors to The Gettysburg National Military Park will be able to experience the results of our new smart parking project.  Preliminary work on the system began at the end of January and it is expected to be operational in June.

The aim of the project is to make parking as convenient as possible for people arriving at the Visitors Center, important during the busier months.  Sensors and cameras are being installed that will monitor parking usage, and when the parking lots are full, electronic message signs will direct arriving visitors to satellite parking at overflow lots, including the Gettysburg Outlets parking lots.  Instead of searching for a parking spot, you go straight to the overflow parking and from there take a Freedom Transit trolley to the Visitors Center.

Thanks to the Gettysburg Foundation and our generous donors, your ride on Freedom Transit will be free of charge through 2013.

Spangler Farmstead Preservation Project

Progress on the rehabilitation of the Spangler Farm has gained momentum since the completion of the Historic Structures Report which documents the original appearance and historic evolution of the property. Since December, five non-historic structures have been removed, some of which were very large and obscured the farmhouse from view. Their removal has dramatically improved the visibility of the original buildings. The key goal is, of course, the rehabilitation and preservation of these four structures. Current plans are to rehabilitate the farmhouse and stabilize and preserve the barn along with further site improvements. Later, preservation will be undertaken on the summer kitchen and the smoke house will be reconstructed.
