Deadline Looms for Ziegler's Grove Match

There's a rare preservation opportunity for Friends of Gettysburg which is fast approaching a deadline.

During the planning stages for the rehabilitation of Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge area of the battlefield (the location of the former Visitor Center), the Gettysburg Foundation received a $500,000 contribution carrying with it the requirement that we raise $2 for every $1 of the gift before July 1, 2010.

The Foundation's board of directors immediately matched the gift with over $500,000 of their own support.  Now's the time for us to come to you with the opportunity to finish off this match which, when complete, will achieve $1.5M in support of this vital project.

Generous gifts from foundations, corporations, and other preservationists added to the momentum of this effort.  At this time the balance remaining to reach the match is less than $80,000 before July 1st!

If you would like to join in this effort, at a time when every contribution doubles in value, you can do so by going to our Defense of Cemetery Hill contribution page.

Thank you!

Over 200 Friends of Gettysburg take a hands-on approach to preservation!

Ultimately, 237 registered members and guests reported for duty early morning on Saturday, June 5. Of that crew of Christopher paints at Eisenhower237, 119 volunteers worked in the Brush and Bucket brigade.  They painted the Eisenhower Show Barn, Breeder Barn, Garage and Reception Center, and the Ampitheatre buildings.  They also worked on the Sherfy iron fence and the Spangler Lane fence.  Gettysburg National Military Park staff assisted volunteers at each site and all sites reported completing their assigned duties except for the Eisenhower Breeder Barn. Park staff completed the building the following Monday. Approximately 86 Friends worked in the Post and Worm Brigade and built 1.2 miles of Virginia Worm fence along both sides of the Emmitsburg Road near the Snyder house and between the Slyder Lane and the Rose Farm.

Over 20 volunteers worked in the Iron Brigade, a new Fencebuilding along Emmitsburg Roadwork detail this year, to maintain the fences that the Friends built in the past. This was intense work but our teams proved they were up to the task, leaving their areas in a newly pristine condition.

We would like to send a huge THANK YOU to all who came out for this event and to our coordinators and Park staff who made the event possible.
Gettysburg Foundation gets "Best In America" designation

The Gettysburg Foundation was recently granted the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence for maintaining the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness.

The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence is awarded to the members of Independent Charities of America and Local Independent Charities of America that have, upon rigorous independent review, been able to certify, document, and demonstrate on an annual basis that they meet the highest standards of public accountability, program effectiveness, and cost effectiveness. These standards include those required by the US Government for inclusion in the Combined Federal Campaign, probably the most exclusive fund drive in the world. Of the 1,000,000 charities operating in the United States today, it is estimated that fewer than 50,000, or 5 percent, meet or exceed these standards, and, of those, fewer than 2,000 have been awarded this Seal.
