Its May, and that means bicycle month in South Carolina. This month's newsletter is dedicated to all of the fantastic events that are happening throughout the state. Thanks to all of the dedicated organizations, clubs, shops, and individuals who are making 2012 bike month the best yet!
Below you will find a listing of the many events happening throughout the state; visit our online calendar for the most up-to date info on these events happening all month long. If we left off an event, or if we did not include something happening in your area, we're very sorry and please let us know.

Join Us in the National Bike Challenge
|
As a way to personally kick off bike month, we encourage you to join us in the National Bike Challenge, an opportunity to challenge yourself to ride more often and support bicycling in South Carolina.
With the challenge you can record your rides, and add up the miles you've ridden, the calories you've burned, and the gas money you've saved. You can connect with other riders in the challenge, or embrace the spirit of competition by winning points for your employer, your community, or your state. You also become eligible for prize drawings after you've logged just three days on your bike.
At the time of this newsletter publishing, collectively as 129 riders and 19 teams, South Carolina has:
- Ridden 13,566 miles (over halfway around the earth!)
- Burned 430,290 kcal
- Saved $1323 in gas
- Eliminated 12,418 lbs CO2
Participation is free, and open to anyone in the United States, or who is employed by a participating U.S.-based company. Join now, start logging your miles, and become eligible for great prizes!

May 6 - This year's Aiken to Ride Century, hosted by the Aiken Bicycle Club, is will benefit Helping Hands, the Edward Scott Richardson Children's Fund and the PCC. The ride travels through beautiful horse country of Aiken County, and ride options of 25, 37, 62 and 100 miles will be available.

May 3, 10, 17, 24, 30 - Bike valet nights at the Block Party. Hosted every Thursday evening during May in downtown Anderson as part of the weekly Block Party events. Happening on the Courthouse Square, 5:30 - 9pm.
May 16 - Ride of Silence to remember all those who have been injured or killed in bicycle crashes. Registration at 6:30pm at North Fant Street Ballfield parking lot. Departs at 7pm.
May 18 - Bike to work day with the Mayor and County Administrator, 7:00am (starting at the Anderson Library). Ride departs at 7:30. Helmet required.
May 21 - Bicycling 101 Education class. Topics will include bicycling tips, changing flats, rules of the road, commuting tips, and biking in Anderson. No registration required, FREE! 6:30-7:30pm. Anderson County main library, 300 North McDuffie, Meeting Room C.

May 1 - Beaufort Memorial Classic in downtown Beaufort; free to the public and begins at 6 p.m.
May 24 - Cabot Community Tour (riding, walking, biking 2,300 miles along the East Coast Greenway with events in the community along the way) departs Beaufort for Charleston.

May 30 - The City adopted a complete streets resolution last year, and is now hosting a workshop to facilitate implementation. 8:30 - 4:30pm, Robert Mills Courthouse, 607 Broad Street. Contact Shawn if you are interested in attending.

April 27 - Charleston Glow Ride. Lighten up the dark against child abuse for this nighttime bike ride. Wear the brightest, most vivid, neon lights you own. Meet at the fountain at Marion Square at 8:30pm.
May 13 - Second Sunday on King Street. On this second Sunday of May, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, King Street will be closed to vehicle traffic to celebrate Southern Sunday afternoons by welcoming everyone to stroll, shop, dine and enjoy Charleston at its finest.
May 16 - Ride of Silence; 6pm at Hampton Park downtown.
May 18 - Bike to Work day celebration beginning at 6:30pm. There will be live music, food, and adult beverages provided by New Belgium. There will be some fun raffles and auctions to raise money for Charleston Moves. Visit Charleston Moves for the most up to date details.
May 19 - Fifth Annual Bike Rodeo & Safety Fair, hosted by Safe Kids Trident Area. Noon to 4pm. North Charleston Fire Museum. For more information, contact Maudra Rogers.
May 26 - Cabot Community Tour (riding, walking, biking 2,300 miles along the East Coast Greenway with events in the community along the way) will have several booths at the Piccolo Spoleto Children's Festival on the Square, 10am-3pm. This Children's Festival will event includes cheese making, bike safety education by the Holy City Bike Coop and the City of Charleston Bike and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, live entertainment, face painting, arts and crafts, music, food a petting zoo, and more.
May 27 - Cabot Community Tour departs Charleston for Georgetown.

April 28 - Join the Mayor on a bike ride through historic downtown Columbia, departing at 11am. To participate, register online here. Councilwoman Gergel will be hosting a trike tour, ideal for those with tricycles or in strollers. Register online here. Check in for both events at 10am.
May 16 - Ride of Silence: 7pm, join cyclists worldwide in a silent slow-paced ride in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. Departs from Summit Cycles in West Columbia, contact Tim Malson for more information.
May 18 - Bike to Work day. Various rides departing from several locations around the city, to arrive at 8am at the Statehouse. From the Statehouse, all will ride as one large group down Main Street ending at Mast General Store, where participants will enjoy a light breakfast. For more information, contact Mary Roe.

Greenville's calendar is full of fun events to engage all types of bicyclists, and below are a brief listing of these happening during bike month. For updates or to volunteer, visit Bikeville.
April 28 - Book signing and dinner with bicycle expert Elly Blue. 7pm Caine Halter Family YMCA. Get your tickets here. Hosted by Pedal Chic.
April 29 - Join the City of Greenville, PCC, and Bikeville for this Traffic Skills 101 course on the essentials of bicycling in traffic. Sears Shelter at McPherson Park, 12:30-5 pm.
April 29 - Family fun ride on the Swamp Rabbit Trail. Bring the whole family as we learn to ride safely in traffic, trail etiquette, and just have a good time riding together. 5pm, helmet required. Hosted by Pedal Chic, meet in their parking lot.
May 10 - Greenville short track mountain bike race series. Riverbend Equestrian Park. 6pm.
May 12 - Two bike tour options during the Urban Farm Tour, hosted by the Greenville Organic Food Organization. 10am and 2pm. Registration required.
May 16 - Ride of Silence. Meet at 6:30 pm at city hall for a few short announcements, distribute black arm bands, and depart at 7 pm. Ride in silence for 1-hour or 12-miles.
May 26 - Community Bike Ride and Free Bike Valet - USA Cycling Championships Time Trial. Ride hosted by the Greenville Spinners, departs from the Zoo at Cleveland Park at 10am. Returns at 3pm.
May 28 - Free Bike Valet - USA Cycling Professional Championships Road Race.

Below are events that this silver Bicycle Friendly Community have planned to host this May, organized by the Town's Bicycling Advisory Committee. Ongoing events that will occur throughout May include several clubs/shops participation in the National Bike Challenge and distribution of helmets, blinky lights and reflectors to those in need.
May 1 - National Bicycle Month Proclamation at Town Hall with HHI Mayor and Town Council. 4 PM.
May 14-18 - Free bike safety inspections at area bike shops (Roadfish, The Bike Doctor, Pedals, Hilton Head Bicycle Company). Noon-2PM.
May 16 - Ride of Silence hosted by Kickin Asphalt Bicycle Club. 6:30 PM @ Street Meet.
May 19 - Kickin' Asphalt Bicycling Club Daufuskie Ride, 9 AM-4PM. Casual Ride on hybrid or fat tire bike, 23-27 miles. Be at Harbor Town in Sea Pines at 8:15 AM to board the Vagabond Cruise, return 3:00pm. For more information, email Mary.

Below are several events happening in Rock Hill this bike month. For more details or updates, visit the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force or Rock Hill Bike Club (RHBC). Also throughout May, the Task Force will be hosting bike rodeo events weekly; visit their website for the most up to date information. The Giordana Velodrome will also be inviting the public to spectate their events during May; visit their website for more information.
April 29 - 2nd Annual Memorial Ride for Debbie McNair. Join the RHBC on a ride honoring Debbie starting at 4:00 pm from the ARP Church (Tirzah) on the corner of Hwy 161 and Paraham. 25 miles. Debbie really enjoyed the RHBC rides and making new friends, let's follow that lead.
May 12 - Join the Mayor for a 4-5 mile family friendly ride through old town and the Winthrop campus. Meet at city hall at 1pm.
May 13 - Mothers Day Ice Cream Ride, 2-4pm. A family friendly event at Glencairn Gardens, hosted by RHBC.
May 16 - Ride of Silence hosted by RHBC. Meet at Wells Fargo, 113 E. Main Street. 7pm.
May 30 - RHBC's Wednesday night Time Trial. Start/finish is at South Point High School. Warm ups start at 6:00 pm. First rider off at 6:30 pm. |

May 4 - 8th Annual Spartanburg Regional Classic. Halftime Festivities include: Kid's Bike Rodeo and Kid's Bike and Big Wheel Race. 4pm.
May 11 - Community Ride at 6:00pm. Meet at Morgan Square.
May 12 - Spartanburg County Parks Family Outdoor Adventure Day including Family Mountain Biking at Va-Du-Mar McMillan Park. Dust off your family's bikes and come out for some off-road fun on two-wheels. Register here to reserve a bike. 11am-12:30pm.
May 14 - 18. Lunchtime rides, departing from various locations. Visit PAL for the most up to date details.
May 14 - Yoga for Bicyclists. Free event at Converse College's Auxiliary Gym of the Physical Activities Complex on campus located on Fairview Avenue. Classes led by Jan LeFrancois and hosted by Partners for Active Living. 5:30pm.
May 15 - Becoming a Bicycle Commuter. A free workshop on riding safely in traffic, what to wear and what to carry, practical tips for choosing routes, basic bicycle safety check- up, and more! 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Hoechst-Celanese Room, Spartanburg County Library, led by LCI's.
May 16 - Ride of Silence. Meet at 6pm at Country Club Road end of the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail.
May 18 - Community Ride at 6:00pm. Meet at Morgan Square.
May 18 - Pedal with your Politician, 8am. Meet at Morgan Square. Presentation to follow the ride.
May 20 - Assault on Morgan Square, family fun ride. Helmets required. 2pm.
May 21 - The Freewheelers of Spartanburg present the 37th Annual Assaults on Mt. Mitchell and Marion.
May 24 - Family Mountain Biking at the Duncan Park Trails, 5:30pm.
May 25 - Community Ride at 6:00pm. Meet at Morgan Square.
May 26 - Community Bike Ride to the Hub City Farmers Market. Ride will start at the Country Club Road Trailhead of the Mary Black Foundation Rail Trail. 9:30 am.

May 12 - Tour de Racks, 3-5pm. The Sullivans Island Bicycle Committee are going to ride around the island and spot the bike racks. At each rack, riders will receive information to show they've been there - when you've visited 6, head back to Cafe Medley for a free treat! Pick up your passport at Cafe Medley (2213 Middle St., Sullivans Island) any time May 11-12th.
May 15 - Bike to Work, 7:30 am. Meet at Cafe Medley - depart 8 am for work. For help in routes, planning, etc., contact Carlsen Huey at 843-422-1594.

May 2 - In its eighth year, the Downtown Walterboro Criterium brings Olympians and national champions to town for a night of racing. 4pm.

May 20 - Ride 18.5 or 37 miles along the scenic Historic Augusta Canal Area on hard packed dirt and asphalt roads with no hills. It's the perfect ride for all of your family and friends! All net proceeds benefit local bicycle advocacy & improvement efforts. Hosted by Andy Jordans Bicycle Warehouse.
