Palmetto Cycling Coalition Update
July 14, 2010
Good Afternoon!rich

The South Carolina Department of Transportation's (SCDOT) issued a press release yesterday announcing their updated Enhancement Program which allows for the improvement of bicycle facilities on some roads by increasing the paved shoulder widths from two feet to four feet.

Roads that are scheduled for resurfacing that are also designated as an 'SC Tour Route' will be considered for an increased paved shoulder from two to four feet.

The SC Bicycle Tour Routes are roads that have been identified by the SCDOT as scenic routes and/or places of historical interest that could be enjoyed by cyclists and pedestrians. South Carolina has six Bicycle Tour Routes that crisscross the state. More information about the SC Bicycle Tour Routes and their locations is available at this web site.

The funding for this additional pavement will come from the Federally funded Enhancement Program, which included bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Although we are delighted by this effort (which has actually been underway for several years now) and commend the SCDOT for their support of bicycling infrastructure, we hope that this commitment will mean more to come from their bicycle program.  At the PCC, we will continue to hold SCDOT accountable to their bicycle and pedestrian policies, and have busily spent the summer meeting with SCDOT Commissioners and staff to strengthen relationships and build support for improved bicycling in South Carolina.

Stay tuned for more on these and other ongoing efforts!

Yours truly,

Rachael Kefalos, Executive Director
