Knitter of the Month: Kirsti Aspelin
by Cecilia Jovel
Kirsti Aspelin, 95, was one of the first women to join Sarah Oliver's knitting group in 2005. Her relatives in Finland taught her to knit at a young age, and since then she has knitted countless sweaters, hats, and blankets.
Born in Berkeley, CA, Kirsti lived there until she was orphaned at age 13. She was sent to Finland to live with relatives. There, she attended a Home-Making School, where she learned how to work and be independent as a young woman. She tried many professions, from working in first class hotels to a rental car company in San Francisco as well as working for different department stores. Her motive was always to better herself and always do her best.
Kirsti was married at age 25 in 1939. Soon, her family grew with four wonderful boys. She continued to live in Finland with her children until her husband died in 1982. That year, she decided to move back to California where she spent her early childhood and she has remained there ever since. Kirsti feels fortunate to have her four sons close by.
We love Kirsti because she always has a positive and loving attitude in life. She faced great challenges as a young girl, but remained determined and continues to lead a spirited and meaningful life. For all of us who go through difficult experiences, Kirsti offers this advice: "Always be positive. It never makes it any better if you cry." |
