Knitter Profile: Daphne Campbell
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daphne Campbell, 89, was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and raised in Bayside, Long Island. She attended College at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, with a major in Home Economics.
It was her college roommate at UMASS who taught Daphne how to knit during her freshman year. She has knit hundreds of sweaters in her lifetime, and has made patterns for dog sweaters, as well as sweaters for teddy bears, which she sold to stores in Marin County and San Francisco before joining Sarah Oliver's knitting team.
Daphne is always on the move, with more energy than many people even a quarter of her age. She is an avid baseball fan, and keeps stats for all 35 teams of both the National and American Leagues. She won the Grace Orne award at the Redwoods for repainting all 154 window sills of the facility. She also painted yellow stripes at the end of all the staircases around the Redwoods to help fellow residents navigate more easily. She has logged more than 900 hours volunteering in the Mill Valley Library History Room.
To date, she has knit 377 bags for Sarah Oliver, and she says it delights her to know women throughout the United States are carrying these bags.
Daphne has two sons who both live in the Bay Area. She has two grandsons, one of whom is recently engaged. She will be spending the Holidays with her eldest son this year.
