December 2, 2011 - As reported in today's Providence Journal, 28 Rhode Island legislators have joined with RI Right to Life in filing a lawsuit against Governor Chafee's executive order creating the Health Benefits Exchange. The executive order was issued after the General Assembly failed to enact legislation to create the exchange due to last minute efforts to insert anti-abortion language into the bill. RI NOW spoke out vehemently against anti-choice activists' attempts to hijack the health exchange process with their anti-choice agenda. Because of Chafee's executive order, Rhode Island is now first in the nation to receive a $58 million grant from the federal government, multi-year Level Two grant money that will enable the state to create the exchange infrastructure. Coalition partner Ocean State Action, issued a press release stating "RI RTL's (Right to Life's) agenda is clear. Their goal is to limit access to abortion by any means necessary and they are willing to jeopardize health care reform and the health and welfare of Rhode Islanders, to do so."
