March 8 is International Women's Day

This year marks the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, a day that was first commemorated on March 19, 2011 in Europe. Join Rhode Island women on the Point Street Bridge at noon to honor this historic day. The idea for 'Join Me on the Bridge' came from the Country Directors of Women for Women International's programs in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Women from different communities came together on a bridge which borders their two countries, in the heart of the conflict, to stand up for peace and an end to violence against women. For more information, contact Nancy Rafi 401-714-2388 or nrafi@hotmail.com

The United National first began celebrating this day on March 8 in 1975. The day is traditionally marked with a message from the Secretary-General. This year's theme is Equal Access to Education, Training and science and technology: Pathway to Decent Work for Women. To learn about observances of this day around the world, click here.

The extreme groups behind the dangerous campaign to bar Planned Parenthood from receiving federal funding are bringing their lies to Rhode Island - we need to be there to tell the truth. Please join Planned Parenthood outside of their Providence Health Clinic at 111 Point Street on Thursday, March 10 from 9-10am to help stand up to these dangerous attacks on Planned Parenthood. This is especially important because the U.S. Senate may vote on Planned Parenthood's funding as early as Tuesday, March 8.

You won't be able to miss the Truth Tour - it's traveling in a big pink bus. (Follow the bus at http://istandwithplannedparenthood.blogspot.com.) All you'll need to do is show up, stand up, and speak the truth with us. Bring your co-workers, your sisters, your mom and your friends. Bring everyone you know who cares about Planned Parenthood and the people they serve. And for all who can't be there in person, join us online at---www.istandwithplannedparenthood.org.

RI NOW Legislative Update

RI NOW has been at the forefront of the advocacy in favor of the Healthy Pregnancies for Incarcerated Women Act H5257/S0165, which would prohibit shackling of pregnant inmates during labor, delivery, and transport to and from medical facilities. All women deserve the opportunity to have safe and healthy pregnancies and give birth in dignified conditions. It is time for Rhode Island to join the 10 other states that have passed similar legislation. RI NOW has testified in support of this bill both the House and Senate, and now is the time to contact legislators to urge passage of this bill.

RI NOW is actively supporting the campaign for Marriage Equality, and submitted testimony in favor of House Bill H5012. This bill expands the definition of persons eligible to marry in Rhode Island to include persons of the same gender. RI NOW will testify in favor of the Senate version of the bill (S0029) on March 10, 2011. Now is the time to pass Marriage Equality in Rhode Island. Call your local senator and representative and tell them that you support marriage equality and they should to. To find your legislators, click here.
