Great Man Made River Project
Pure Technologies will be marking its 10 year anniversary working on the Great Man-Made River (GMRA) Project in North Africa this month. Pure started on the project in 2000 with 1.8 miles/ 3 km of acoustic monitoring using hydrophones, diesel generators and buried cable in the Sahara desert. Technology has advanced and now more than 250 miles/ 400 km of PCCP is being monitored using Pure's Acoustic Fiber Optic (AFO) technology, solar power and wireless data transmission. The equipment is designed to perform under the harsh conditions present, and data collected over the years has enabled GMRA to implement proactive repairs on several pipe sections. Read more

SAFELY MANAGING PCCP
Frequent Inspections or Permanent Structural Monitoring?
*Editorial by Dave Kurtz, P.E.; Pure Technologies

It's no secret that the underground pipeline infrastructure for water and wastewater systems is aging - much of it beyond its original design life. Historically, repairs and replacement efforts were a reactive response to failing pipelines.  Only recently, with the advent of non-destructive inspection technologies, have water and wastewater utilities initiated proactive measures to assess and monitor the condition of buried pipelines.  With today's technologies, proactive owners have a choice to manage critical pipelines: frequent inspections or permanent monitoring.   Read more

FORCE MAIN CASE STUDY -
VEOLIA WATER NORTH AMERICA / MILWAUKEE METROPOLITAN
SEWERAGE DISTRICT
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Veolia Water North America operates and maintains Milwaukee's Jones Island and South Shore water reclamation facilities and the District's conveyance and Deep Tunnel systems under contract to Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District.  The Underwood Creek Force main, a wet weather force main that runs along Underwood Creek in suburban Milwaukee had experienced previous failures that had resulted in costly damage to the environment and the neighboring communities. Pure Technologies was contacted to survey the pipeline with its SmartBall tool to check for the presence of leaks and gas pockets on the force main.  Read more         View video of capture

Pure Technologies Powers UpPURE TECHNOLOGIES POWERS UP!

Pure Technologies has long provided state-of-the-art condition assessment and asset management solutions for buried water infrastructure.  Most of these services have been provided to water utilities, but Pure is seeing an increase in condition assessment needs for buried infrastructure at power plants.  Responding to these needs, Pure is dedicating additional resources and capabilities that are only available to Pure's power clients.

"Safely managing buried infrastructure is vital for power utilities to avoid the environmental consequences and unexpected delays from pipe failures.  Our water clients have long faced these issues and Pure Technologies has successfully helped water agencies avoid failures of large diameter pipe and avoid unexpected outages.  We believe many of the lessons already learned in the water industry will apply to the power industry." states Michael Higgins, P.E. Vice President of Pure Technologies.

"However, the power industry has a unique set of challenges with a wide variety of pipe, minimal shut down periods, a variety of diameters (including some very large pipe) and multiple failure modes.  Pure Technologies has wide ranging, but deep technical capabilities and this is why we believe Pure Technologies is uniquely positioned to help the power industry build its program to assess and proactively its buried infrastructure." PureRobotPURE TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES PUREROBOT™

In March 2010 Pure Technologies introduced the overhauled PureRobot™ pipeline assessment technology.  The new system was launched during a project requiring a closed-circuit television (CCTV) and an electromagnetic P-Wave™ inspection of a 10-mile section of 36-inch prestressed concrete cylinder pipe.  PureRobot™ is a unique long-range robotic inspection platform capable of fully submerged inspections with deployments in excess of 8,000 linear feet in either direction from a single access point.  The long range deployment capability allows the PureRobotics™ inspection team to assess pipelines using a reduced number of access points while providing clients with detailed, real time internal pipeline condition data.  The redesigned chassis of PureRobot™ also allows for additional and more efficient sensor deployment along with improved navigation through difficult pipe conditions.  The system is housed in a portable state of the art, and highly mobile PureRobotics™ trailer.   Read more
