Know the Zone

Your Signal for High Performance
As a high performance trainer, getting athletes into the Zone is as exhilarating for me as it is for them. That's because, as a trainer, I have to be in the Zone in order to do it, and it FEELS good. The transition in athletes is amazing and easy for me to see, but they have to feel it.

Myths of High Performance

Visualization is as good as practice

Visualization is NOT
as good as practice. It
IS practice. And it is sometimes better than skills practice because you can incorporate all manner of obstacles and frustrations that may or may not show up in competitions.
Never competed in extreme wind? Practice getting rid of the frustration of doing so in your head and smiling at the frustration of those around you.
Never competed with cameras in your face or with cranky officials or with whiny competitors?
Practice in your head.
There are so many advantages to visualization practice that make it better than skills practice, and so many advantages to skills practice that make it better than visualization, that perhaps, they are two sides of the same coin.
Solution: Heads I win, tails I win.

"There are no winners or losers in high performance - only those who actively participate in changing their own state and those who leave it to chance (or to others)."
~ Bob Palmer

Hi Everyone,
Some years ago I asked a U.S. collegiate athlete if her coach used any high performance methods to get her team physically and mentally ready. She said, yes, he showed us a video.
No matter what your sport, you need more than a video. Most teams have a system for offense and defense. They have a system for conditioning and strength training. They may even have a system for pre-game meals and diet. As importantly, they also require a system for high performance.
This newsletter is full of stories on high performance as well as a video that introduces our free on-line seminar. The seminar introduces you to our Three Step Program for achieving the Zone, where you'll learn how easy the Zone is to achieve and how it needs to be achieved FIRST! Sit back and check it out!
Sincerely,
Bob Palmer

New Perspectives in High Performance
| |
In my recent high performance workshop in Edmonton for Olympic level shooters, one of the participants gave me an interesting look after my introduction to my high performance model.
I asked her what the look was for, and she said that what I was presenting was a huge paradigm shift. I agreed. A Paradigm Shift. One's thinking about high performance will be quite different after my workshop. ...

Goals and Challenges in Sport
| | We recently surveyed our athletes and coaches and found a common theme in the challenges they face in their sport as well as their goals. The results come as no surprise to us since time and again we have heard athletes tell us they want more consistency in their sport; they are frustrated with the progress in their skill development and they are psyched out by competitors and teams or have their game affected by environmental or people distractions. They want to learn strategies to increase focus, resolve intimidation, stay in the Zone and build excitement and momentum toward winning, Learning leadership skills and strategies and simply enjoying both practice and competition also rank high on the list. The SportExcel high performance system addresses these challenges and goals and gives athletes and coaches a foundation to success in their sport. |

Applying High Performance to Education and Sport

I got a desperate call from one of my athletes saying she had failed an important exam. She had studied long and hard and couldn't' understand why she hadn't passed. The exam was critical to her future career and she had taken it seriously, but to no avail.
I asked if she liked the course and her response was that it was boring and her professor very dry. I asked her what she thought her Zone level was for this class out of a score of ten (with one being low and ten being high). She told me it felt like a four out of 10 most of the time.
So I said to her "You wanted to be a 10 on the exam after a whole semester of classes where you were only like a four? It's not going to happen.
