In Kate Atkinson's 4th book in her Jackson Brodie series, Jackson observes an outrageous exchange between two women, one an habitual offender, the other a retired security chief named Tracy, resulting in one of the women becoming an instant mother of a small, neglected little girl. Dog in tow, Jackson is about to learn, along with Tracy, that no good deed goes unpunished.

6:30 p.m., Main Library
In the late 1970s, as morning dawns on the provincial city of Muddy River, a spirited young woman, Gu Shan, once a devoted follower of Chairman Mao, has renounced her faith in Communism. Now a political prisoner, she is to be executed for her dissent. In luminous prose, award-winning author Yiyun Li gives us a powerful and beautiful portrait of human courage and despair in dramatic times.
Autobiography - Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight
Wednesday, May 16 @ 6:30 p.m, Main Library
In Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller remembers her African childhood with candor and sensitivity. Though it is a diary of an unruly life in an often inhospitable place, this book is suffused with Fuller's endearing ability to find laughter, even when there is little to celebrate. Fuller's debut is unsentimental and unflinching but always captivating. In wry and sometimes hilarious prose, she stares down disaster and looks back with rage and love at the life of an extraordinary family in an extraordinary time.
