Book Discussion Groups
Mystery & Suspense - Post-MortemTuesday, September 6 @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. and Mission) In Patricia Cornwell's first forensic mystery set in Richmond, Virginia, a brilliant serial killer has left a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralyzed the city. Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman. But this investigation will test Kay like no other, because it's being sabotaged from within and someone wants her dead! Discussion facilitated by Heidi.Ontiveros@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7975. Mostly Literary Fiction - The ImperfectionistsMonday, September 12 @ Noon, Peet's Coffee (B St. and Mission) and 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Rome, Tom Rachman's wry, vibrant debut novel follows the topsy-turvy private lives of the reporters, editors, and executives of an international English language newspaper as they struggle to keep it-and themselves-afloat. Fifty years and many changes have ensued since the paper was founded by an enigmatic millionaire, and now, amid the stained carpeting and dingy office furniture, the staff's personal dramas seem far more important than the daily headlines. Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information. Autobiography & Memoir - Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven Wednesday, September 21 @ 6:30 p.m., Main Library In 1986, Susan Gilman and a classmate embarked on a bold trek around the globe starting in the People's Republic of China. At that point, China had been open to independent backpackers for roughly ten minutes. Armed only with the collected works of Nietzsche and Linda Goodman's Love Signs, the two friends plunged into the dusty streets of Shanghai. Unsurprisingly, they quickly found themselves in over their heads. As their journey became increasingly harrowing, they found themselves facing crises that Susan didn't think they'd survive. But by summoning strengths she never knew she had, the two travelers found their way out of a Chinese heart of darkness. Group is facilitated byAbbe.Kalos@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7941. |
