Japanese Internment

San Leandro Public Library's Digital Story Project:

Stories of Japanese American Internment

This incredible documentary is a collection of stories by local Japanese Americans about their personal experiences of being sent to internment camps during World War II. This film was produced by San Leandro Library with a grant from the California State Library. The Library found that there was so much demand and encouragement, that this living history project has been expanded to include a second film.

Mostly Literary Fiction - The Imperfectionists
Monday, September 12 @ Noon, Peet's Coffee (B St. and Mission) and
6:30-7:45 p.m., Main LibraryThe Imperfectionists

Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Rome, Tom Rachman's wry, vibrant debut novel follows the topsy-turvy private lives of the reporters, editors, and executives of an international English language newspaper as they struggle to keep it-and themselves-afloat. Fifty years and many changes have ensued since the paper was founded by an enigmatic millionaire, and now, amid the stained carpeting and dingy office furniture, the staff's personal dramas seem far more important than the daily headlines.

Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information.

Autobiography & Memoir - Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven
Wednesday, September 21 @ 6:30 p.m., Main Library  Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven

In 1986, Susan Gilman and a classmate embarked on a bold trek around the globe starting in the People's Republic of China. At that point, China had been open to independent backpackers for roughly ten minutes. Armed only with the collected works of Nietzsche and Linda Goodman's Love Signs, the two friends plunged into the dusty streets of Shanghai. Unsurprisingly, they quickly found themselves in over their heads.  As their journey became increasingly harrowing, they found themselves facing crises that Susan didn't think they'd survive. But by summoning strengths she never knew she had, the two travelers found their way out of a Chinese heart of darkness.
