Documentary Film Festival
Mondays, 6:00 p.m. Main Library Reel Injun August 1
Reel Injun is a documentary about the evolution of the depiction of First Nations people in film, from the silent era to today. Featuring clips from hundreds of films, candid interviews with famous Native and non-Native directors, writers and actors, Reel Injun traces how the image of First Nations people in cinema has influenced the understanding and misunderstanding of their culture and history.
Me Facing Life: Cyntoia's Story August 8
This film delves into the troubled life of a young girl sentenced to life in prison for murder. Cyntoia Brown was an average American teenager. But a series of bad decisions led the 16-year-old into a situation that ended with her killing a man who had picked her up for sex. She was sentenced to life in a Tennessee Prison meaning, in her case, she will serve a minimum of 51 years. This film challenges our assumptions about violence and explores how factors such as biology and family history can doom some young people from the start.
For Once in My Life August 22 For Once in My Life is a true story about a band made up of singers and musicians with a wide range of mental and physical disabilities who dream of making music. The film reveals their struggles and triumphs, as performers and people, as they deal with severe challenges while becoming true musicians. With passionate concert footage and intimate behind-the-scenes glimpses into the band members' lives, the film paints a heart-warming portrait of what people with disabilities can do when given a chance. |

In Defense of Food
Book-to-Action Series
Multi-Ethnic Food Festival and Community Potluck
Sunday, August 7
11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
Hayward Community Gardens
25051 Whitman (at Berry Ave.)
Complete the In Defense of Food Book-to-Action series with a celebration of food and community in a special event at one of Hayward's community treasures - the Hayward Community Gardens. Michael Pollan encourages us to value the large community of relationships surrounding food: between plants and the soil, between the growers and the plants and animals they tend, between the cooks and the growers who supply the ingredients, and between the cooks and the people who come to the table to enjoy the meal.
Take a few hours to celebrate delicious fresh and locally grown food and make new friendships - bring a food dish you have prepared to share with others. Enjoy cooking demonstrations from Hayward Community Garden participants and make a tour of the garden, which features indigenous crops from around the world. |
