Main Library The Calling is a four-hour documentary series that follows seven Muslims, Catholics, Evangelical Christians, and Jews on a dramatic journey - training to become professional clergy. Embarking on life paths that demand tremendous personal sacrifice and commitment, these seminarians must uphold timeless truths in an era that values quick fixes and hot trends, and face a public that challenges the very relevance of their mission.  A new look at an old job, The Calling takes viewers into the unknown world of seminaries to tell entertaining and compelling personal stories of how faith is lived today.The Calling underscores our spiritual common ground and offers intimate portraits that provide a fresh, nuanced portrayal of faith in America.

Looking for feedback on your original writing? In response to community demand, the library is launching a peer-supported writer's group. Join other local writers to help you stay on track with your writing, whether it's fiction, non-fiction, or poetry. Bring at least 5 copies of the piece you wish to share with the group. The group will be facilitated by local writer and spoken word performer Leticia Garcia Bradford.
 Writing Workshop with TJ Puckett Saturday, July 30 1:00-4:00 p.m. Main Library Do you want to release the writer within? Does getting started on your project feel overwhelming? Join the library's summer community of writers in a series of three writing workshops, led by Chabot College Instructor TJ Puckett. The group will complete a series of informal exercises that explore the writing process, and be introduced to aspects of craft, such as concrete imagery, voice, and character.

Knitting Circle

Discover the joys of knitting by joining our knitting circle at the Hayward Library. Experienced knitter Zanaib Green will help novice knitters with easy projects such as scarves and shawls and more advanced knitters with projects such as hats, gloves, socks and sweaters. All levels of knitters are welcome. Please bring size 10 or 10 1/2 knitting needles and the yarn of your choice, additional yarn will be available at the meeting.

In Defense of Food Book-to-Action: An Afternoon with Cookbook Author Janet Fletcher and Local CSA Farmers

As Michael Pollan notes in In Defense of Food, research suggests that people who cook are more likely to eat a more healthful diet. So let's get cooking! Meet Janet Fletcher, a certified Master Gardener, San Francisco Chronicle columnist, and author of the cookbooks Fresh From the Farmers' Market and Eating Local. She will talk about Community Supported Agriculture and the advantages of shopping at your local farmers' market. Get inspiration and ideas for shopping, preparing, and cooking with seasonal produce. She will be joined by some local growers who will talk about their farms and the benefits of buying fresh and locally grown food.
