Book-to-Action Discussion of In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto
Monday, June 20, 12 noon
Peet's Coffee (B St & Mission)
Tuesday, June 21, 6:30 p.m.
Main Library
Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma launched a national conversation about the American way of eating; In Defense of Food shows us how to change it, one meal at a time. Pollan proposes a new answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberating words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. Pollan's eloquent manifesto shows us how we can make thoughtful food choices that will enrich our lives, enlarge our sense of what it means to be healthy, and bring pleasure back to eating. Stay tuned for details about the community service component of the In Defense of Food Book-to-Action program in July. .

Book Discussion Groups
Mystery & Suspense - Murder at Mansfield ParkTuesday, June 7 @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. and Mission) In Lynn Shepherd's debut mystery novel, Mary Crawford, a minor character in Mansfield Park, takes center stage in a clever reworking of the classic Austen novel that's strong on plot, character, and historical accuracy. In prose uncannily like the original, Shepherd recreates meek Fanny Price as a rich egotistical and spoiled heiress who turns up dead in a trench on the park grounds, an apparent victim of foul play, with a horrified Mary ending up playing detective.
Discussion facilitated by Heidi.Ontiveros@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7975. Mostly Literary Fiction - Await Your ReplyMonday, June 13 @ Noon, Peet's Coffee (B St. and Mission) and 6:30-7:45 p.m., Main Library The lives of three strangers interconnect in unforeseen ways-and with unexpected consequences-in acclaimed author Dan Chaon's gripping novel. Miles Cheshire can't stop searching for his troubled twin brother, Hayden, who has been missing for ten years. Hayden has covered his tracks skillfully, managing along the way to hold down various jobs and seem entirely normal. But some version of the truth is always concealed. Await Your Reply is a literary thriller, an unforgettable novel in which pasts are invented and reinvented and the future is both seductively uncharted and perilously unmoored. Discussion facilitated by Sally.Thomas@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7700. Not able to attend meetings but want to discuss this book with others? Join GoodReads.com and participate in online discussions! You must have an account on GoodReads.com to participate. Contact Sally for more information. Autobiography & Memoir The Autobiography Book Group will be on vacation in June. Please join us next month on Wednesday, July 20, when we will be discussing, Down the Nile: Alone in a Fisherman's Skiff by Rosemary Mahoney. Group is facilitated by Abbe.Kalos@hayward-ca.gov, 510-881-7941.
