New Library Book Vending Machines Expand Services to Underserved Areas

Thanks to two separate grant awards, the library has purchased and installed two low-cost library book vending machines at "satellite library" sites in historically underserved areas of Hayward.

One machine is located at the Hayward Day Labor Center in South Hayward and supports a Library-operated Native Language Literacy program. The second machine is part of a new partnership with HUSD which provides a Library-operated After School Homework Center project at Longwood Elementary School in West Hayward.

The new book machines look like typical snack vending machines, except that instead of being stocked with chips and candy, they're stocked with library books. And instead of inserting money, one simply scans their library card, uses the keypad to select the book they want, and then the machine dispenses the desired book along with a receipt and due date. The book is automatically checked out on the library card used, and can be returned to any Hayward Library location, or simply dropped into the book return boxes located next to the vending machines.

These projects are supported by grants from the Library Services & Technology Act, Bay Area Library & Information Services, and Friends of the Hayward Public Library.

Mystery Novels by Women - The Tiger in the Smoke
The Tiger in the Smoke

Tuesday, November 1 @ 11:30 a.m., Le Paradis Bakery (D St. & Mission)

Margery Allingham's The Tiger in the Smoke, one of the great thrillers in English literature, conveys a deep understanding of goodness and evil. "The Tiger" is the murderer known as Jack Havoc, out of jail and on the rampage in London, the "Smoke."  But what has he to do with Albert Campion's saintly uncle, Canon Avril and his uncle's happily engaged daughter, Meg? Why is she afraid that her late husband has come back from the dead?  And where is her fiancé? The tension is almost painful in this outstanding mystery thriller.

Room

Room is a bestselling novel by critically acclaimed Irish writer Emma Donoghue. To five-year-old-Jack, Room is the world... It's where he was born, it's where he and his Ma eat and sleep and play and learn. At night, his Ma shuts him safely in the wardrobe, where he is meant to be asleep when Old Nick visits. Room is home to Jack, but to Ma it's the prison where she has been held for seven years. With Jack's curiosity building alongside her own desperation, she knows that Room cannot contain either much longer. Room is a story of unconquerable love in harrowing circumstances, and of the diamond-hard bond between a mother and her child.
